The San Benito boys golf team lost to Palma by 15 shots, 210 to 225, on the front nine of the par 37 Diablo Course on Thursday. North Salinas finished third with a 238.
The Haybaler score could have been a lot lower if the team wasn’t 34 over on par 5s.
On the par 5 hole No. 7, Wesley Nelson had two out of bounds shots and scored a 10.
On hole 9, another par 5, Chris Schackleton hit two OBs to score a 12, and Dan Isaacson and Nelson each were out of bounds to score a 9.
“I believe our team is swinging too hard on the par 5 tee shots,” said Baler coach Mark Tinder. “They watch the pros hit a 300-plus yard drive and then reach a par 5 in two. Our team thinks they should do the same thing. If we would take our regular swings instead of trying to smash it, we would score a lot better.”
Zack Zgragren was 2 under after four holes but played 4 over on the par fives for a round of 39. Chase Graves shot 2 over and also finished with a 39.
“This was his best performance this season,” Tinder said. “He played with a very sore back and could not swing hard at the ball. Therefore his swing was smooth, and he hit the ball well. He may have found the secret.”
There was a four-way tie for the medalist. Michael Uchikado of Palma and Geordon Bean of North Salinas also shot a 39.
