The Haybaler boys soccer team continues to be in a funk after a
3-1 loss to North Salinas on Tuesday. They rained down shots on a
stubborn Vikings team but could manage just one goal in their fifth
consecutive loss in league play.
The Balers (4-10-2, 1-6-1 TCAL) came out firing. Jonathan Alonso
and Ernesto Lostanau both just missed goals in the first five
minutes of the game. The Vikings got on the scoreboard with a nice
cross and shot as the teams scrambled in front of the net. The half
ended with North Salinas up 1-0.
The Haybaler boys soccer team continues to be in a funk after a 3-1 loss to North Salinas on Tuesday. They rained down shots on a stubborn Vikings team but could manage just one goal in their fifth consecutive loss in league play.
The Balers (4-10-2, 1-6-1 TCAL) came out firing. Jonathan Alonso and Ernesto Lostanau both just missed goals in the first five minutes of the game. The Vikings got on the scoreboard with a nice cross and shot as the teams scrambled in front of the net. The half ended with North Salinas up 1-0.
In the second half, the Balers continued to just miss passes on the artificial surface.
“We had trouble adjusting our passes and running our routes effectively to finish the goals,” said coach Michael Warner. “It’s frustrating not being able to put together a string of ball possessions and get the winning goals after so many chances. It’s just a mental block for us, and we must get it straightened out for Salinas this Thursday.”
Ernesto Lostanau missed a header on a perfect cross by Alonso. Jesus Ramos had a couple nice chances to score – a header on the far post on a cross from Ernesto Lostanau and a breakaway shot that trickled just wide of the net.
Jorge Lopez rocketed a blast off the short post on a corner kick from Alfredo Arredondo. Alonso blasted a bouncing shot, which was cradled by the keeper.
Arredondo scored for Hollister with 14 minutes remaining in the second half to even the score at 1-1.
But with just four minutes left, North Salinas scored back-to-back goals on corner kicks to earn a 3-1 victory and gain some sense of respect after a 5-0 drubbing by the Balers just two weeks ago.
JV Note: The Balers suffered their second loss in a row and second league loss, falling to North Salinas 2-0. The wet field contributed greatly to slowing the Balers’ offense down, but a greatly improved Viking team did the real damage. Strong play by Ramon Orozco and Jose Diaz DeLeon kept the game interesting and scoreless through the first half.
