San Benito boys, girls 2nd at Avis Kelley Invitational; Lila
Yoldi breaks school record in shot put
Gilroy

Lila Yoldi, on two separate occasions last week, broke even.

The San Benito senior’s rather up-again-down-again week ended on yet another high note, though, as her most recent shot-put push ranks her among the top three in the Central Coast Section.

After suffering back pains early last week before setting the school record in the shot put Thursday against North Salinas – with a heave of 39-07 3/4 – Yoldi didn’t practice on Friday because she said she felt too sore.

At the 38th annual Avis Kelley Invitational in Gilroy Saturday, however, she shattered her school record. Again.

Yoldi’s throw of 39-10 1/2 was a drastic improvement of nearly three inches in just two days, and her one-finger approach was perhaps another sign of the up-and-down week she experienced.

“It slipped and rolled off my index finger,” Yoldi said. “So I pretty much threw it with my index finger.”

Yoldi earned second place with the throw, as first was occupied by Milpitas’ Luisa Musika. The top-ranked Musika set a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 42-01 1/2.

Musika also took first in the discus, where Lila’s sister, Sarah, finished fourth with a toss of 118-01 – a PR of nine feet.

“My goal for this year was to throw 120,” Sarah said. “I’m two feet away.”

The nine-foot improvement, though, vaulted Sarah from the 11th best in the CCS to sixth in the discus event.

The Lady ‘Balers fell just short of toppling Archbishop Mitty for the team championship, however, as they compiled 129.5 points to Mitty’s 130.

The ‘Baler boys also claimed second behind the Monarchs, recording 90 points to Mitty’s 117.

With temperatures nearing 90, the Avis Kelley invite not only brought heightened competition to the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Saturday, but also an electronic timing system – meaning if the competition didn’t push you, an accurate time would.

Ryan Shorey, whose previous best time in the 400 was 50.31, was hoping to deliver a sub-50 time on Saturday.

The San Benito junior easily took first place in the 400 meters as a result, and boys coach Iran White clocked him by hand at 49.9.

“Hopefully, he stopped it late,” laughed Shorey.

Although he did set a PR time for himself, Shorey eventually found out he was officially clocked at 50.24.

“That was my goal today to break 50,” he said. “It was tough on the home stretch. That was the hardest part of the race.”

The hardest part of the race for Evan McFadden was perhaps when the race was over, as the junior Haybaler was experiencing a case of bronchitis and said his lungs were tight following the 110-meter hurdles.

“I felt all right but not as good as I can be,” said McFadden, who recorded a PR of 15.47. “I felt I was hanging over the hurdles too long,”

McFadden finished third in the 110 hurdles behind teammate Austin Schmidt (15.37) and Gilroy’s Peter Guenther (15.30).

San Benito will compete in their final dual meet at Alisal Wednesday before the Tri-County Athletic League Championships on May 9.

Bronchitis or not, expect McFadden to be competing at the TCALs as well. When asked why he didn’t sit out the race on Saturday, the San Benito hurdler responded simply, “It’s my favorite event.”
