Time for Hollister High to lace ’em up. The Balers overpowered Aptos 64-48 Thursday in the first round of the North Salinas Tournament.

Now the action heats up.

The Balers (10-2) tangle with one of the best teams in the Central Coast Section in 9-1 Salinas tonight at 6:30 p.m. in what should be an up-and-down semifinal. The Cowboys won an intense 68-64 battle Thursday over a talented Monterey team, which features 6-8 center Yasouf Smith.

Kyle Sharp, who has made all-tournament in all three preseason tourneys thus far, led the Balers with 19 points against Aptos. Anthony Butler had 18 points while Jason Sims had eight.

“That was a breakthrough game for Sims,” said Baler head coach David Kaplansky. “I’m giving him more minutes. He’s really coming around.”

Kaplansky also praised point guard Eric Davis, who had three points.

“He didn’t score much, but he really handled the ball well,” said Kaplansky.

The Balers were perfect at the free throw line, shooting 12-for-12.

The tournament runs through Saturday.
