San Benito goalie Sarah Yoldi has proved her worth this season, but she may have saved her best for the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament.
The Lady ‘Balers held a 5-4 lead with eight seconds remaining in their semifinal match to Salinas Thursday at the Santa Catalina School in Monterey.
The Cowboys were given a 5-meter shot – which is basically a penalty shot – with under 10 seconds remaining and a trip to the TCAL finals on the line.
But Yoldi blocked the shot.
The Cowboys had a rebound opportunity to tie the game with just one second on the clock, but the attempt failed, and San Benito will advance to Saturday’s final against Santa Catalina.
“We were all so happy,” coach Lacey Sutton said. “It was a defensive game for each team. We had a lot of shots go right at their goalie.”
Trailing 3-1 after one quarter, the Lady ‘Balers battled back to take a 5-3 lead late into the fourth quarter.
Salinas actually scored their fourth goal with one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, setting up the final 5-meter attempt at Yoldi with just seconds remaining.
“Overall, Salinas was a lot faster than we were,” Sutton said.
San Benito is now in the TCAL championship match at Santa Catalina on Saturday at noon.
On Tuesday, after San Benito’s 12-1 win over Watsonville, Sutton commented on Santa Catalina.
“A couple of seniors want another shot at Santa Catalina,” she said. “They’ve got second the last two years in the TCAL. They don’t want to get second again.”
