The Haybaler girls soccer team recorded its second shutout in a

over .500.
The Balers were up 1-0 at the end of the first half after a goal
by Brittany Huth – her second in two days. But this time she scored
the goal from the center midfield position rather than from the

The Haybaler girls soccer team recorded its second shutout in a row Wednesday after blanking North Salinas 4-0 on the road.

Rose Vandenberg had a pair of penalty kicks after she was taken down inside the box to help the Balers (6-5-2, 2-1 TCAL) move back over .500.

The Balers were up 1-0 at the end of the first half after a goal by Brittany Huth – her second in two days. But this time she scored the goal from the center midfield position rather than from the forward spot she was playing in the last game.

Vandenberg crossed the ball from the far right corner, and Huth bounced it off her body into the goal.

“We came out a little flat in the first 25 minutes,” said coach Michael Schurig. “The girls just assumed it would be an easy game. We weren’t passing well, and they were. Once we started playing our game, we were passing all around them, and they had to flood the defense.”

About 10 minutes into the second half, Vandenberg was tripped up from behind to prevent an almost certain goal. She was tripped up again from behind in the 72nd minute of the game.

In the 63rd minute, Vandenberg had a pass to Jenny Maheu for the third goal. Maheu kept running straight despite two defenders sticking with her and touched the ball into the goal.

Most of the shots that the Balers did give up defensively were outside the 18-yard line, Schurig said.

The Balers will play Salinas at home next Wednesday.

“We can’t come out assuming that we will beat the team like we did today,” Schurig said. “We have to come out strong. Our goal is keep shutting out teams.”
