The San Benito girls basketball team improved to 9-3 with a 48-36 victory over Orestimba from Newman in the third game of the Sweet 16 in Seaside Monday.
Cortney Almaguer had another great game coming off the bench. She was five for seven including a three pointer at the end of the third quarter for a team high of 12 points.
Trisha Lee had 11 points, and Jaime Hall had 10 before fouling out.
Christina Osborne played well at the No. 5 spot even though she had not practiced there before, picking up eight rebounds and six points.
Johni Kieswetter and Dani Andrewson covered Orestimba’s main shooter and were able to shut her down in the man-to-man defense.
The Balers shot a mere 5 for 20 from the free-throw line, while Orestimba was 11 for 26.
“Our passing and ball control was much better than Saturday” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “We had six less turnovers than Saturday, and we scored 12 more points. We seemed more focused tonight also, and the intensity was higher.”
The Balers will play Seaside for fifth place today at 2:30 p.m.
“This will be a tough game as they really like to run and play the jungleball-type game,” Dean said. “If we play our game and don’t get into a running match with them we will be OK.”
