Despite a scoreless first half, the San Benito boys’ soccer team pocketed a pair of goals in the final 40 minutes and picked up its first win in Tri-County Athletic League action on Monday when it shutout visiting Palma 2-0 in Hollister.
Francisco Palomino deposited both scores for the Balers, who improve to 1-2-1 in the TCAL, 7-2-2 overall.
It is San Benito’s first win since a Jan. 4 contest against Carmel. The Balers have had a string of ties and losses since their game against the Padres to open the new year, and have been held to just one goal in each of their last three games.
It was a scoreless first half on Monday, too, even though San Benito outshot Palma 8-2 in the game.
But off an assist by Jose Santoyo, Palomino finally pushed San Benito ahead in the 65th minute, then tacked on a second score in the 73rd minute off an assist by Ivan Martinez.
Keeper Manuel Garcia made two saves in the win.
Although Palma falls to 0-4-0 in the TCAL, 1-8-1 overall, it is San Benito’s first win against the Chieftains since Dec. 11, 2007.
The Balers’ scheduled game on Wednesday against Alisal took place after The Weekend Pinnacle’s press time. The team will return today, Friday, in a game at Everett Alvarez at 5:15 p.m.

Jesse Ramirez and Nick Salgado poured in a combined 53 points, and the Anzar Hawks moved a game above .500 in Coastal Athletic League action Tuesday night with an easy 67-36 victory against the York School.
Ramirez led all scorers with 30 points in the game, while Salgado added 23 points for the Hawks, who improve to 3-2 in the CAL, 4-8 overall.
An added bonus for Anzar Tuesday was an additional player in the lineup. The Hawks, having battled numbers issues this season, have played all of their games with just six players. But Tuesday night’s matchup against the private Monterey school saw seven players crack the lineup for the first time this season.
“It makes a difference,” said Anzar head coach Ed Cecena, whose team narrowly led 16-11 after the first quarter before pulling away in the second half.
The Hawks led 32-18 at halftime, and carried a sizable 46-27 lead entering the final period.
Andres Gomez chimed in with eight points for Anzar, while Alex Samuels, Matt Espinoza and Jesse Soliz each added two points.
The game against York was rescheduled from last Thursday, when the Monterey school asked to postpone the match, where as the win for the Hawks follows a difficult 58-50 overtime loss to Anchorpoint Christian from last Tuesday.
Anzar’s scheduled game against Trinity Christian on Wednesday was held after The Weekend Pinnacle’s press time. The team will return to the floor Monday at home to Oakwood at 7 p.m.
