San Benito loses 4-0 in season finale to Salinas
Salinas
The San Benito boys soccer team ended their season on a low note Thursday, as the Salinas Cowboys defeated the Haybalers 4-0.
Coach Ben Alvarez said his team dominated for the first 35 minutes, controlling the midfield and setting the tone.
But Salinas scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute, and took a 1-0 lead to the break.
“We’re playing very, very good ball,” Alvarez said. “I never questioned their heart.”
The Cowboys, though, scored just eight minutes into the second half. Alvarez described the goal as a “slow roller” that found its way to the back of the net.
“Two very critical mistakes,” Alvarez said of Salinas’ first two scores. With San Benito controlling the middle early in the game, and Salinas already up 2-nil, Alvarez believed his team was somewhat demoralized from the deficit.
“You’ve got to keep your heads up,” he later told his team.
Salinas, however, began to apply pressure to the left side, and scored two late goals in the 60th and 70th minutes to make the game 4-0.
“Everything went to that side,” Alvarez said. “The passing was outstanding on the front … We played with a lot of heart.
“Overall, it was a good season. They know what we need to do.”
San Benito finishes with a 6-9-2 record, 4-8-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
