The San Benito girls basketball team fell 37-36 against Terra Nova after posting a 52-20 win over Mountain View in the Seaside Sweet 16 opener.

Against Terra Nova on Saturday, the Balers (8-3) were down 13-4 after the first quarter.

“You can see from the first quarter score which team came out ready to play basketball,” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “We went from having a great game to not being able to execute our offense three out of the four quarters.”

The Balers continued to battle back and tied the game at 3:24 left and then took a four-point with two minutes to go.

But with 14 seconds left to play, the Balers turned the ball over and were forced to foul Inez Santiago. Santiago sank both of her free throws to put Terra Nova ahead. The Balers did get a shot off with three seconds to go, but it was no good.

Trisha Lee led the Balers with 13 points. Jaime Hall had eight. Johni Kieswetter and Dani Andrewson scored four, Mallorie Wilson had three and Ashley Patton scored two points.

In the tournament opener on Friday against Mountain View, the Balers hauled in 38 rebounds even with Mountain View’s 6-2 center. The Balers shot 37 percent from the field.

None of the starters played in the fourth quarter, but the Balers still won by 32 points. Mountain View made just two baskets in the second half.

“Our defense was very strong, and we pushed them way out on the perimeter,” Dean said. “This was the first time this year we played well for four quarters. Our passing was very good inside and outside. We handled their press and pushed the ball up the court. The girls played the best game of the year.”

Cortney Almaguer went 4 for 4 from the field and made four free throws for 12 points. Lee had 10 points, Hall had eight, Wilson had six points and 10 rebounds. Christina Osborne went 3 for 6 for six points. Andrewson had four points and Jaime Flores, Kristina Leal and Kieswetter all had two points.

Patton had four assists and was strong on defense again. Andee Walton had three rebounds and a steal. Jen Anaya had a pair of steals and an assist while running the offense.

The Balers, looking for a fifth-place finish in the Seaside Sweet 16, will play Orestima of Newman today at 3:30 p.m.

The final four for the tourney are Sacred Heart Prep, St. Francis, Terra Nova and Madera. Gilroy and Seaside play for seventh place.
