Carmel – The San Benito Haybalers want another chance.

On Monday, the ‘Baler boys water polo team lost 8-7 in overtime to host Carmel. After the match ended 5-5 in regulation, two additional three-minute quarters were played to decide the winner.

In the first overtime quarter, Jordan Schafer and Ryan Whiteside found the back of the net to keep pace with Carmel’s two goals. But in the second overtime quarter, San Benito was held scoreless, while the Padres took a one-goal lead for the win.

“They scored one goal and we didn’t match it,” coach Tom Agan said. “I’m looking forward to our league finals, because I truly believe we’re the better team and I want to prove it.”

Schafer had four goals in the match, while Whiteside had two goals on Monday. Robert Marks supplied the ‘Balers with a goal as well.

“We’re trying to do all the right things,” Agan added. “We definitely made some errors, but the kids are hustling and the kids are doing what they need to win. It’s tough.”

Last weekend, San Benito came up on the short end of three matches at the Los Altos Tournament.

On Friday, the ‘Balers lost to Saint Ignatius 14-9, despite Schafer scoring five times and Adam Rianda adding four of his own.

On Saturday, San Benito lost to Gunn 8-6, and fell to Leland 10-6. Against Leland, Schafer had three goals, Rianda had a pair and Thomas Parcell had one. In that match, keeper Kyle Reuther had 11 blocks.

On Wednesday, the ‘Balers will play Stevenson at Santa Catalina at 5:30pm.

“We’ll see if we can get everybody back on track,” Agan said. “I think we will.”

Note: The San Benito junior varsity team lost to Carmel on Monday 8-3. Eric Nicolaysen, Jesse Richards and Nick Angulo each had one goal a piece. The JV’s will play on Wednesday against Stevenson at Santa Catalina.
