San Benito had a strong first half, but couldn’t keep it going in the second half and fell 66-48 on the road to first-place North Salinas in Tri-County Athletic League girls basketball play Tuesday.

The Haybalers (5-12, 2-4 TCAL) came out with intensity early and took a 14-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Vikings (15-4, 6-0) rebounded a bit in the second, but San Benito still held strong and trailed by just a point at halftime.

“The intensity was up,” coach Al Rowe said. “We didn’t let them penetrate into the paint. We pushed the ball, most of our points were on fast breaks.”

The third quarter spelled doom for San Benito. North Salinas outscored the ‘Balers 26-7 in the period to take control of the game.

“They spread the ball around a little faster and had additional girls step up the scoring,” Rowe said. “They got back on defense and got our fast break slowed down.”

Vanessa Farias led San Benito with 18 points, Elena Fata had 14 and Megan Halstead chipped in with 10.

Briana Mathews paced the Vikings with 18 and Chelsea Dacpano added 12.

“In that first half we opened some eyes,” Rowe said. “We’ve just got to keep it up, keep pounding it to them.”
