San Benito recorded its third straight shutout after losing to Live Oak in the Tri-County League opener.
The Balers (7-5-2, 3-1 TCAL) blanked Salinas 2-0 Wednesday evening.
“They came out pretty strong in the first 25 minutes and pretty much dominated each possession even though they had just one shot on goal in the first half,” said Baler coach Mike Schurig. “They definitely were a better team than last year. They will be a good threat next year. So we will have to be ready for them.”
The Balers had 10 shots on goal during the game, while Salinas had just four.
In the 29th minute, Rose Vandenberg had a nice corner kick that Brittany Lobb headed into the net to give the Balers a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Goalie Mary Von Urff made a nice save before the half as she scrambled out to get a ball that was hit by a Baler defender to the right post to knock it out and force a corner kick.
Three minutes into the second half, Jenny Maheu took a shot that bounced off the Salinas goalie. Vandenberg ran up and was able to put the goal in.
She was almost able to put in another goal late in the game, but the ball deflected off the right goal post.
Salinas was able to create some opportunities in the final minutes to keep things interesting.
Notre Dame watched after its game against Live Oak.
“They were cheering on Salinas, but they kind of disappeared after the second goal,” Schurig said.
The Balers will play Notre Dame on Saturday.
“We’re not giving up on first place,” said Schurig, whose team is second behind Live Oak. “If Live Oak ties or loses and we win our last six games, it could happen. But even if we know that we can only finish in second place. We still want to beat them (Live Oak). It would be such a momentum boost.”
JV Note: The San Benito girls (8-2-3, 4-0 TCAL) remained perfect in league with a 3-0 win over Salinas. Erika Trujilo scored two goals and Brandi Russell had the other goal.
Against North Salinas, the Balers won 4-1. Freshman Verenice Fonseca had two, and Vanessa O’Campo and Abbie Ceja also scored. The defense was led by Nicole Silveira. The Viking goal was a penalty kick because of a hand ball in the box.
The JV team also beat Live Oak 2-0 with goals from O’Campo and Fonseca.
“As far as I know, San Benito has never beaten Live Oak in JV or varsity,” said JV coach Monica Sandoval. “That is a major accomplishment for them.”
