Gilroy – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers remained perfect on the year when they defeated the Gilroy Mustangs 5-2 in league action, but the match at Gilroy High School Tuesday was far closer than what the final score may suggest.

“It could have went either way in a couple of matches,” said Gilroy coach Jami Reynolds. “(Gilroy) did pretty well. I think Hollister was very steady and consistent all the way through.”

San Benito held a narrow 3-2 lead late, with just two doubles matches left to be played.

“There were a couple of matches that were closer than the scores indicate,” said San Benito coach Ed Cecena. “It was really kind of touch-and-go.”

In doubles action, San Benito’s Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra won 6-3, 7-5 over Natalie Toews and Kimberly Johnson, clinching the match for San Benito, while the No. 1 team of Rachel Maheu and Elena Fata beat Gilroy’s Karissa Tellez and Holly Hunter 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

“There was some pressure … some nerves involved,” Cecena said. “There were some close sets.”

In No. 1 singles, Lady ‘Baler Amanda Marshall defeated Mischelle Tajan 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets, while teammate Yumi Chang continued the trend, upending Gilroy’s Emily Castro 6-2, 6-1.

The Mustangs would get on the scoreboard when Amy Huang beat San Benito’s Kaitlyn O’Keefe 7-5, 6-4. In No. 4 singles, Abby Woods won 6-1, 6-1 over Mustang Gories Kwong.

“They were a good opponent,” Reynolds said.

Gilroy’s No. 3 doubles team of Anneliese Zelina and Melanie Morelos defeated Rachel Smith and Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith 6-2, 7-6 to round out the day.

San Benito (6-0 overall) will play Thursday at North Salinas at 3:30pm, while Gilroy (1-2 overall) will be at Alvarez Thursday in Salinas at 3:30pm.
