Rose Vandenberg scores all four for SBHS, three goals in the
second half
Hollister – After falling behind 1-0 early in the game and then finding itself trailing 3-1 at halftime, the San Benito girls soccer team had to be wondering how they were going to get back in it versus North Salinas on Monday.
They found their answer in Rose Vandenberg.
Vandenberg breathed new life into her team right away in the second half. As soon as play began for the game’s final 40 minutes, Vandenberg stole the ball away from Amanda Alcantar, juked her way through a few defenders, and put it right past Chelsea Campbell and into the back of the net to bring the score to 3-2.
But North Salinas’ Tannia Hernandez answered right back with some crafty footwork of her own a few minutes later to get one past the Baler defense for her second score of the game.
Apparently, Vandenberg didn’t like this at all.
Only five minutes after the Vikings’ scored, Vandenberg muscled her way through the defense with some nice stop and go moves before scoring her third goal of the game.
She wasn’t done there though. With her team still trailing 4-3, Vandenberg took a great pass from Rachel Maheu and headed upfield. Vandenberg once again left the defense looking confused with her brilliant moves on her way to the goal. And when she gets into a ne-on-one situation with the goalie, look out. Vandenberg rifled a shot past Campbell to bring the score even at 4-4, her fourth goal of the contest.
Vandenberg got a couple more opportunities over the course of the game’s final 10 minutes but Campbell was able to contain her shots. All but one, a wild ball that nearly got into the goal late in the game but just missed crossing the line.
Defensive standouts for San Benito included Carly Brigantino, Mary Von Urff and Michel Sanchez.
The Haybalers hit the road on January 19 to face Salinas for their third league game of the year, set to begin at 5pm.
