The Haybalers didn’t let much get past midfield during the 5-0 win against visiting Gilroy on Thursday afternoon.
The Mustangs generated just a few chances in the first half, and Baler goalie Mary Von Urff touched the ball just once in the second half.
“We really are taking pride in shutting everyone out,” said Baler coach Mike Schurig. “It is not something we want to take lightly.”
The Balers were led by four goals from Rose Vandenberg. She scored the first goal 1:06 into the game. Vandenberg also had two goals on corner kicks, which hooked into the goal.
“I don’t usually do that, but I just decided to try it today,” Vandenberg said. “Gilroy played the game with a lot of heart.”
But after Vandenberg scored those two goals, the Mustangs moved three defenders back in front of the goal for the next kicks that she took.
“I don’t know what they were thinking,” Schurig said. “They were trying to stay with some of the players. I’ve always felt that you get a couple people in the box and mark up people on the line. It cost them twice.”
Julie Broyer also almost had goal on a corner kick, but the goalie was able to get down on it and trap it with the help of the post.
The Balers had several chances in the game to score. Becky Bonner, who again played a solid game defensively, had four nice shots, including one late in the second half that just missed the goal.
The other goal in the game was scored by Martha Navarro, who was filling in for Jenny Maheu. Maheu twisted her ankle in the game against Live Oak and was sitting out to help it heal.
The Balers subbed freely, and everyone had the chance to play during the game.
“The ref was doing his best to keep anyone from getting hurt and to keep us from running away with it,” Schurig said. “We weren’t trying to run away with it. We were subbing in players constantly and trying different things. The reason we had Rose in there a lot was to help out some of the other forwards.”
Foreign exchange student Gennie Martellotto made her Baler debut. Martellotto, who transferred from Argentina during the second semester, plays mostly in the midfielder and forward and played a solid game.
The Balers will play visiting North Salinas on Feb. 4. Live Oak, who is the league leader, barely defeated North Salinas 1-0 with a late goal on Thursday.
“We took the game too lightly last time because we had just finished dominating Gilroy, 7-0,” Schurig said. “They dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, and it took us a while to get back on track. We are not going to do that this game. We are going to take it to them right away.”
JV Note: The Balers defeated Gilroy 3-0 Thursday and remain a perfect 7-0 in league.
The first goal was scored by Eva Esparza, who had a beautiful shot from right outside the 18-yard line right over the goalie’s hands into the corner of the net.
The Balers had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.
The second goal was scored by Vanessa O’Campo. O’Campo was one-on-one with the goalie and put a nice shot to the corner.
The third goal was made by Verranice Fornesca. On a throw-in pass by Dominique Lupo, Fornesca shot from the left side of the field into the goal.
The defense was led by Nicole Silviera, Sarah Mullen and Kassie Kearns. Every player got a chance to play in this game.
