The San Benito boys tennis team kicked off their 2008 campaign in dominating fashion Tuesday, as they easily defeated visiting Watsonville 7-0 at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
It was the season opener for the Haybalers, which had two league matches canceled last week. Both of those matches are in the process of being rescheduled, although no dates have been announced.
Despite the delay to the season, though, the ‘Balers cruised past Watsonville for an easy sweep.
“They were definitely more skilled,” coach Chris Yoder said of his team, “and a little more experienced, too.”
No. 1 singles player Derek Panger defeated Robert Gross 6-1, 6-0, while Mark Tobias did the same, beating Javier Vargas 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 player Joe Frusetta swept past Jose Martinez 6-3, 6-3, and Tony Culler rounded out the singles players with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Sandro Renteria.
In doubles, DJ Neilson and John Rudolphs beat Juan Lopez and Josh Pitt 6-3, 6-2, while No. 2 Conner Baray and Mike Labuguen defeated Jose Guzman and Christian Barajas 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 3 team of Austin Tan and Thomas Parcell defeated Juan Hernandez and Adrian Alanis 6-1, 6-4 to round out the doubles teams.
With their league opener now scheduled for March 6 at Everett Alvarez, the ‘Balers will have one more tune-up match against Seaside at Ridgemark on Thursday. The meet will start at 3:30 p.m.
