The San Benito Lady ‘Balers began the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament on Monday in Salinas, but afternoon matches were postponed until today due to the inclement weather.

Although some matches were played in full, the remaining matches, including the semifinals and finals for both singles and doubles, will reconvene today at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas at 10 a.m.

Two Lady ‘Balers did however get their matches in the morning before rain ended play in the afternoon.

In singles, Notre Dame’s Alexis Pressas was seeded No. 3 and eliminated San Benito’s Kaitlyn O’Keefe 6-3, 6-1.

No. 2-seed Amanda Marshall received a bye in the morning. Her match against Lauren Sanchez of North Salinas began play but was postponed. The match will carryover, however, and Marshall is currently trailing 2-3 in the first set.

In doubles, Notre Dame’s April Harvey and Brooke Caraccioli eliminated San Benito’s Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra 5-7, 7-6 (10-6).

No. 1-seed Elena Fata and Rachel Maheu of San Benito also had a bye in the morning round. Their match was postponed until today. They are currently ahead of Notre Dame’s Sara Tlymale and Shannon MacIsaac 5-2 in the first set.

In the TCAL Tournament, only two singles and two doubles teams compete.

After the tournament, San Benito will compete in the Central Coast Section Playoffs on Nov. 6.

Cupertino

The San Benito Haybalers went 1-2 at the Monta Vista Tournament last weekend, their final test before the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament this week.

In their first game in Cupertino, the Haybalers fell to host Monta Vista 8-6, despite both teams being tied at halftime 4-4.

Jordan Schafer had three goals in the opener, Adam Rianda added a pair and Phil Torres scored a goal as well.

Goalie Kyle Reuther blocked seven shots in the game.

In their second game, the ‘Balers nearly defeated Aptos, but fell in overtime 10-8.

“So we were right there,” coach Tom Agan said. “We played hard all game, but it slipped away in overtime.”

Schafer once again led San Benito with four goals and Rianda pocketed three of his own. Matt McCullough scored a goal as well, while Reuther made 11 saves in net.

“Kyle’s doing a great job,” Agan said. “He’s just solid.”

Behind six goals from Schafer in the third game, San Benito defeated Harbor 10-6. Reuther had nine saves against the Pirates, Rianda scored twice and both Ryan Whiteside and Robert Marks scored one goal a piece.

San Benito will now prepare for the TCAL tournament. They’ll host the winner of Stevenson-Watsonville at San Benito High School at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
