Miami –Hollister resident Daniel Barone pitched a scoreless 12th inning on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals, and earned the first Major League win of his career with a 5-4 victory.
Barone (1-2), a 2001 graduate of San Benito High School, was moved to the bullpen in recent weeks and has faired well.
On Wednesday in Miami, the Marlins and Nationals went all the way into the 12th inning to decide the game. Barone came in as the last of seven pitchers Florida used in order to pull out the one-run win.
“It’s awesome, it’s exciting. I’m speechless,” said Barone to the Associated Press. Barone was saving the official scorecard to give to his parents. “It was one of those games where I knew everyone would get in there. We got it done.”
Barone pitched a hitless 12th and struck out one. In the bottom half, teammate Todd Linden singled in Reggie Abercrombie with two outs to give the Marlins the win, and a Hollister product his first Major League victory.
