Nico Mendoza tossed four shutout innings, Blake Selsor knocked in two runs, and the Anzar High baseball team, having previously earned the Coastal Athletic League crown last week, continued with its run through league play when it topped visiting Trinity Christian by a 9-6 margin on Monday in San Juan Bautista.

Anzar has won four straight games, including Saturday’s 4-3 non-conference victory over Minarets and last Friday’s convincing 13-0 win against Marina that sealed the CAL title for the San Juan Bautista high school.

On Monday, the Hawks again took advantage of the free bases supplied by their opponents, as Trinity Christian committed four errors in the field, while Anzar drew eight walks en route to the victory.

The Hawks are now 11-0 in the CAL, 15-8 overall.

Mendoza started the game and pitched four innings, allowing no runs while striking out six and walking two, while Brian Fredrickson closed out the game in relief, tossing the remaining three innings for Anzar, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out four.

It was Selsor’s two-out, two-RBI single in the third inning that pushed Anzar out to an early lead, scoring Fredrickson and Tyler Hendricks, while Anzar added two more runs in the fourth to control a 4-0 lead.

Trinity found the scoreboard in the fifth with a pair of runs, cutting the Hawks’ lead in half, but Anzar responded in the sixth frame to the tune of four more runs.

It was 9-2 entering the final inning, and although Trinity scored four runs of its own, the initial deficit was too much to overcome.

Josh Holtzclaw was 2 of 3 for the Hawks with an RBI and a walk, while Nick Salgado was 1 of 4 with a double.

Anzar will return to its home diamond on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup with King City. First pitch is 4 p.m.
