The Gavilan College women’s basketball team played its first game Tuesday under new head coach Erik Nelson, who is rebuilding the program from scratch. It was the first game the team has played since the 2004-05 season.
Gavilan lost 75-36 at West Hills College. But the score wasn’t a true representation of the makeup of the team because the Rams are still waiting for four players to join them from the playoff-bound volleyball team, Nelson said. Nelson, though, was excited to see how the team plays with a full complement of players during the rematch at Gavilan later in the season.
“They battled hard but we only had eight players,” Nelson said. “The good thing is that there are still 23 or 24 more games to play. When they have a bad night, they just have to learn from it and move on.”
Gavilan was supposed play in a tournament at Sierra College in Rocklin this weekend but had to withdraw after Merritt College wasn’t able to field a team.
The Rams will travel to Sacramento to face American River on Wednesday.
