High school students are gearing up to beg, borrow and deal for charity.

Students from high schools in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties will participate in the first “beg, borrow and deal” event that raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network and an area school.

To win, students will be given 50 tasks and will try to complete as many as possible over a two-day period. The team with the most completed wins.

“It’s just like a scavenger hunt. You get to go to different places, do different things and have a lot of fun doing something for other people,” said Kaj Helding, event coordinator and member of the Monterey Peninsula Kiwanis Club. The club is presenting the event.

Teams of up to three students find sponsors to raise money. High schools can have more than one team per school. On Saturday, Oct. 25, the teams get a list of 50 tasks, and all team members must complete as many tasks as possible. The team that completes the most wins. Examples of tasks include “cleaning your room to your parents’ satisfaction” or “taking a photo on the steps of city hall,” Helding said.

“You don’t have to be strong and you don’t have to be pretty to do these tasks. But, you do have to be pretty strong in using your brain,” he said. “The tasks are designed to encourage good citizenship and incorporate knowledge of things in the area.”

Tasks will be validated by on-lookers or the students themselves, Helding said. Rewards from the fundraising will be evenly split between the Children’s Miracle Network and the winning team’s school of choice.

Teams from King City to Santa Cruz have submitted applications, Helding said.

“Today, it seems like there’s a lot of trouble and that’s the stuff that’s highlighted,” he said. “Most people want to get kids off the street. I want to get kids on the street – for the right reasons.”

Applications are due Oct. 20 and can be picked up at area high schools or Muenzer’s Cyclery and Sports Center. Students will pick up the list of tasks Oct. 25 at the Monterey Beach Hotel between 7:30 and 9 a.m. Lists are due back at the hotel by 4 p.m. Oct. 26.
