A new voice for local sports

Hi, I’m Andrew Matheson. You may know me from such hit columns as “Hot dogs 5, nachos 4,” “Warriors should be worried” and “San Benito was certainly a thorn in Berkeley’s side,” some of my most recent work as sports editor of the Hollister Free Lance.

Well, I’ve been given the reins to The Weekend Pinnacle sports section as well, and I plan to bring that same style of column to Hollister’s weekly newspaper.

I’ll still man the sports desk at the Free Lance, providing the game stories, the athlete feature stories and the occasional sports column, updating it online everyday.

So if you simply can’t stand me, or find my points and conclusions completely without justification or merit, or just believe that I am terribly unfunny, well, then I apologize.

Hopefully, we can get past our differences and make this a sports section you will continue to pick up every Friday.

For those who have no idea who I am, allow me to introduce myself.

I’m currently the sports editor of the Free Lance, and have been so since July 2007. Before that, I worked in the same capacity for a newspaper in central Oregon, which was called, rather appropriately, the Central Oregonian.

Prior to my two years smack dab in the middle of Oregon, I attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. And before any of that happened, I was born and raised in the state of Massachusetts, where I met California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger during my very first job as a golf caddy.

And now I’m in California. Weird, huh?

Now, I certainly still have a passion for New England sports, but being out here has made me fully realize the frustrating power of East Coast Bias.

I see it. I know it. I hate it.

With that said, I’m always looking for feedback on what you, the readers, want, because I’m sure it’s not what’s being pumped out of Bristol, Conn.

Currently, we’re going to keep the sports section at The Weekend Pinnacle similar to what it’s always been: top-of-the-line feature stories on San Benito’s local athletes, sports columns on everything local or national, short and sweet wrap-ups of the previous week’s games, as well as a quick look into the future of what’s on tap for the high schools, colleges and local pro athletes.

We’re also looking for local columnists that have a deep passion for sports and can rant, rave or make a reasonable point on topics that the town is taking about – everything from the local golf scene to Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s latest Cup win, from the most recent win by the Balers to the happenings out at Hollister Hills.

Any ideas are welcome, as we’re looking to broaden the scope of the sports section. Feel free to give me a call or shoot me an e-mail.

It’s your paper. I’m just writing for it.
