The San Benito County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution staking claim to a $1.2 million state grant to help refurbish or build new recreational facilities in the county.

The Board’s unanimous decision Tuesday ensured the county would not lose the grant funding, which is part of the money raised under the state’s Resources Bond Act of 2002.

“If we don’t make this application, we will lose this funding,” County Public Works Director Doug Koenig told the Board.

By informing the state of the county’s intention to make use of the grant money, the state’s Parks Department, which is administering the grant program, will set the funding aside, giving county officials until June 30, 2006, to come up with a way to use the money and have an agreement approved by the state.

Nadine DaRoza, public works administrative services manager, said the grant was made possible by voters through the passage of Proposition 40 on March 5, 2002, when it was approved with 56.8 percent of the vote.

The $2.6 billion dollar bond was used primarily to pay for clean water, clean air and safe neighborhood programs, DaRoza said. Another section of the proposition called for additional funding for public parks and recreational activities.

She said the grant does have restrictions preventing the county from using the money to pay for employee salaries or anything other than the acquisition, development, improvement, rehabilitation, restoration, or enhancement of local parks and recreational lands and facilities.

“Other than that, it is at the discretion of the Board on which project to spend it on,” DaRoza said.
