The Anzar baseball team lost 4-2 against visiting Soledad on Friday.

The Hawks (4-11, 3-7 MTAL) were up 2-1 going into the fifth inning. But after a couple errors, Soledad hit a three-run home run to 4-2.

Austin Muesal and Matt Wilkinson drove in the Hawks’ runs in the second inning. Junior Sam Stewart went the distance one the mound, giving up one earned run and striking out five.

Freshman Adrian Monroy had pitched 16 innings in a row without allowing an earned run coming into the game at Soledad on Wednesday.

The Hawks have a young team this year. Coach Leroy Dozal said he usually starts four freshmen and two seniors for most of the games.

“I am really happy to have my share of athletes,” Dozal said. “Most of the players know how to play but haven’t played for awhile. A lot of the kids are being thrown into the fire. But their minds are sponges, and they are always trying to learn.”

The Hawks have had to try to manufacture a lot of runs this year. But if they can win their final three games, the Hawks could qualify for the Central Coast Section Division 3 playoffs with their .500 league record.

“I feel real good about next year,” Dozal said. “We got our pitchers coming back.”

Note: Assistant coach John Stewart will be heading up the summer team in Gilroy this year.
