Hollister – About 36 teams from around the state are expected to attend Saturday’s Central California Silver Glove Championships Saturday.
The event will be the first time in six years that the Silver Gloves competion has been held in Hollister.
“We need to bring this kind of stuff back to Hollister,” said Bulldog Boxing Club owner Zeke Lopez, who organized the tournament. “In the 13 years doing this, Hollister has never really been a fight town. It’s too bad because we’ve always had a lot boxers doing well from Hollister.”
Lopez said he was encouraged by one of the largest turnouts he’s seen during the summer tournament he hosted and hopes the momentum continues.
“This is a great opportunity because this is one of the best tournaments,” Lopez said. “The athletes get a lot of recognition and have the chance to get noticed.”
One of the resesons for hosting the tournament was to save on the cost of hotels required for competing in a weekend tournament. Lopez was originally hoping to hold the competion on both Saturday and Sunday but couldn’t find a place to hold the tournament on Sunday.
The championship round will be held Nov. 14 in Bakersfield.
Lopez doesn’t yet know how many bouts will be scheduled but said it could be close to the 26 bouts held at Bakersfiled last year.
There are four boxers from Hollister scheduled to compete – Alfred Martinez, Jorge Hernandez, Jonathan Casaca and Tony Corrales.
The event will be held at Abundant Life Church. Doors open at 4pm, and the fights start at 5pm. Tickets are $10 per person. Ages 8 and under are free. For more information, call Lopez at 636-1349.
