Some of the details have yet to be worked out, but Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has signed his name to a Nov. 6 lightweight bout in New Jersey against Vicente Escobedo of Sacramento.
“I’m all ready to go,” Guerrero said Wednesday. “Now I’m just kind of waiting to hear what’s going on.”
The Gilroy native said negotiations involving the monetary aspect as well as a specific location for the fight are still being figured out.
Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz said last week that talks were nearly finalized. Guerrero signed his name to the fight Tuesday, according to his publicist Mario Serrano.
“Everything is still getting worked out with all of that,” Guerrero said. “I’m excited to go to the East Coast to fight. It would have been nice to fight in San Jose because (Escobedo) is out of Sacramento, but it gives me a chance to showcase in front of the East Coast fans.”
After his unanimous decision victory over Joel Casamayor on July 31, Guerrero made it clear he wanted a title shot, whether it be at junior welterweight versus Juan Manuel Marquez or at lightweight against Michael Katsidis.
Guerrero drew neither, but in Escobedo, the Ghost gets a top-five lightweight boxer who lost a decision to Katsidis for the WBO interim lightweight title last September.
“Escobedo is one of the top lightweight fighters,” Guerrero said. “It’s a good fight for me to stay busy and have on my resume.
“Staying consistent and winning the big fights starts to put a lot of pressure on the champion. It will raise a lot of eye brows.”
Guerrero said he will train the rest of the month in Gilroy and head down south to Los Angeles to continue his regimen beginning in October.
