Hawks boys basketball falls to Soledad 47-46
Two days removed from a 2-2 tie with Pacific Collegiate, the Anzar girls soccer team rebounded last Friday when they defeated Soledad 1-0.
“This ended up being the most exciting game of the season, no doubt,” coach Deric McLean said. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-0-1 in the Coastal Athletic League, 7-2-1 overall.
After the 2-2 tie in Santa Cruz, McLean said the team discussed the lack of communication on the field in that particular game.
Added McLean, “This game featured the best communication and the best effort we’ve seen this year, and we needed every bit of it.”
Brianna McCain scored the game’s only goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Alex Brown. Erin Deleissegues recorded five saves in net for Anzar, including one save where the keeper laid out to block an attempt. Deleissegues made the save with her right hand only, and prevented any rebound in a box filled with Soledad players.
McLean also noted Allison Lopez, who showed no hesitation and made “30 perfectly clean slide tackles.”
“This might be my favorite win as a soccer coach,” McLean said. “This was the first game of this season where we made the transition from a bunch of talented soccer players into a team, and trust me, everyone felt it.”
The Hawks will return to the pitch Tuesday when they host York in San Juan Bautista at 3:30 p.m.

Alex Sanchez scored the only goal in the game on an assist from Joel Gutierrez.
“I think that puts us No. 1 in the league,” coach Ruben Fuentes said.
The Hawks do, in fact, sit in first place in the Coastal Athletic League with a 3-0-1 record, 3-1-1 overall. Said Fuentes, “It’s big for the kids and the school.”
