Victims’ Rights Week
The San Benito County Victim/Witness and The District Attorney’s Office is recognizing Victims’ Rights Week, April 22-28, as part of the National Crime Victims’ Week. This year’s theme – “Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim” – celebrates the vision behind that progress and the ideal of serving all victims. The vision that launched the victims’ right movement emerged more than 30 years ago. Then-as now- crime victims endured physical and emotional wounds, costly financial burdens, and sometimes a hostile criminal justice system. Since the 1980’s the nation has made dramatic progress in securing rights, protections, and services for victims of crime. Victims of crime deserve compassion, understanding and respect. 18.7 million Americans are directly harmed by crime each year, and each crime affects many more family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers. The physical, emotional, and financial impact of crime falls on people of all ages and abilities, and of all economic, racial, and social backgrounds. If you or someone you know has been victimized, the San Benito County Victim/Witness Assistance Center can help with emotional support, guidance through the criminal justice system, assistance in applying for victim compensation and awareness of victims’ rights. For more information on services or how to volunteer, please call (831)634-1397 or stop by our office located at 419 Fourth Street.
