Art League calendars on sale

The 2012 Hollister Art League Calendars of local flowers are now on sale.

This Calendar entitled “Beauty Around” features reproductions of original art in

oils, watercolors, acrylics, lino-cuts and photography by local artists.

These colorful calendars may be purchased at Blak Sage Gallery and Country Rose Gallery & Frame. All proceeds go towards San Benito High School art scholarships.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation.

Hospice Foundation receives major grants

Hospice Foundation has received a grant of $75,000 from Community Foundation for Monterey County to fund local end-of-life care services for children, and a $45,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to fund practical training in grief support for marriage and family therapist interns. Community Foundation for Monterey County’s grant is from its Rudy E. Futer Fund for Human and Humane Needs. Monterey Peninsula Foundation is host of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Established in 1997, Hospice Foundation is a nonprofit community-based philanthropy group that soley funds end-of-life care programs in Monterey and San Benito County.

“These local foundations have formed a unique funding partnership with us to ensure the availability of end-of-life care programs in Monterey and San Benito counties,” said Lisa Bennett, the director of development for Hospice Foundation, in a press release.

Union offers scholarships

HOLLISTER – The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 234 is offering $500 scholarships to three high school graduates, one each from San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. The scholarship is for students who will graduate in the current school year.

To apply, a student must have at least one present or past member of any union in his or her immediate family and type a 500-word essay on one of three topics related to labor and union movements. The application deadline is March 9.

Boy Scouts offer tree pick-up

HOLLISTER – The Boy Scouts will be picking up used Christmas trees in Hollister and San Juan, on Jan. 1, 7 and 8, by 9 a.m. The trees should be stripped of decorations and stands. They will pick up within the city limits of both cities, and will also offer drop-off sites at the Veterans Memorial Park, Enterprise Road and the San Juan Bautista Scout House. Those living outside city limits can call to arrange a pick up. All trees are recycled.

The donation for tree pick-up is $8. Donations can be left under the doormat. Hollister residents can make the checks payable to BSA Troop 436 while San Juan residents can make the checks payable to BSA Troop 428.

The funds raised support troop activities, send scouts to camp in the summer and fund the Gerald Rawn Memorial Endowment.

CMAP and Si, Se Puede sponsor MLK Community Fair

HOLLISTER – Communtiy Media Access Partnership and the Si, Se Puede! Learning Center are hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Fair Jan. 16 that will celebrate and honor local community leaders for their courage and service. The event will feature a digital storytelling program called “Stories of Courage,” as well as food, beverages, live entertainment, speakers and more.

Community members are invited to honor a volunteer or community member who has exhibited courage and service in the last year; invite youth and community members to attend the event on Jan. 16 to share their “Stories of Courage”; bring children’s books and canned goods to the event for donations; or volunteer at the event or attend to enjoy the fun.

Those who would like to honor a community member should write CMPA with the names of the individuals and a short description of the reason they should be honored. Teachers contact CMAP to see about using “Stories of Courage” curriculum in their classrooms. The books, as well as arts and crafts supplies will be used by the Si, Se Puede Learning Center, and the good will be donated to the Community Food Bank of San Benito.

Red Cross seeks volunteers

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross, Monterey Bay Area Chapter is looking for volunteers to staff the Hollister chapter office. The chapter office is located at 357 Fifth St., and the hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shifts are four hours, once a week, but any hours will be considered.

HOLLISTER – New bridge classes will begin in January, including modern bridge conventions for duplicate and social bridge players of all levels.

All classes are from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Dunne Park. The cost of classes is $8 each.
