Block party permit applications due; 4th of July events

HOLLISTER – Anyone wishing to close a street in the City of Hollister (a public right of way) for a block party at any time, especially for the 4th of July celebrations, must have permission from the City of Hollister. Applications are available in the city clerk’s office, City Hall, 375 Fifth St., Hollister or by calling the City Clerk’s office at 636-4300, ext, 16.

Applicants must submit a completed application for a block party as well as an executed hold harmless agreement, both of which are available from the city clerk’s office, as well as a certificate of insurance naming the City of Hollister as an additional insured. Certificates of insurance are usually available from a resident’s home owners insurance company.

Normally a request for a block party is required to be submitted 30 days prior to an event. However, due to increased requests for 4th of July block party permits and the schedule City Council meetings, all completed applications for a block party permit for this 4th of July must be submitted to the city clerk’s office no later than today, at 5 p.m.

The city of Hollister will be hosting the annual 4th of July Kiddie Parade, at 10 a.m., meeting at Veterans Memorial Park as well as a fireworks show at Marguerite Maze Middle School after dusk.

County library to accept passport applications

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Free Library will soon be accepting passport applications on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. U.S. citizens planning international travel may soon apply for their passports by calling the library to schedule an appointment. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Rock ’N Wine series

HOLLISTER – The inaugural Rock ’N Wine series will begin June 9, at 9Lives nightclub in Gilroy, 7430 Monterey St. the series will combing live music with elements of a traditional wine tasting event. This weekend’s event will feature Big Wood, a melodic rock band based in the South Bay that is currently in the studio recording a debut album with Billy Squier producer Mack. They will be playing songs from the upcoming album. Special guest Blue Fuse will play after Big Wood, with a selection of popular classic rock songs.

The featured wineries this week include Fortino Winery, Solis Winery and Sarah’s Vineyard.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with the wine tasting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Big Wood will take the stage at 8:30 p.m., with Blue Fuse taking the stage at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at www.ninelivesclub.com or at the door.

Pacheco State Park’s Eleventh Kite Day

HOLLISTER – The 11th Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other fun activities include a “Make Your Own Kite Free” table and free face painting as well as pie eating contests and bubble gum blowing contests. Plus, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables, a sun and wind table and craft tables. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. It may be cool and windy or very hot. Hot Dog Heaven from Los Banos will sell lunches. There is a $5 state park day use fee per car.

VFW offers support to homeless vets

HOLLISTER – The Veterans of Foreign Wars is hosting a stand down at the Salinas Rodeo grounds for homeless veterans and veterans that came back from war and are still living with their parents. The event is June 19, starting at noon, through June 21 at noon. The event will include free medical and dental care for veterans, free veterinary care for their pets and free food. Other services will be provided by chaplains, barbers and beauticians and legal aide. There will be referrals for employment, education and housing. Veterans can receive assistant in reviewing their military records and documents, health services and VA claims.

The event will provide a warm, comfortable, clean and safe place for veterans to stay. Families and children are invited to come along, and services will be provided for special-needs children. Each homeless veteran will receive fresh, clean cloths and a sleeping bag. A free bus will be leaving Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister on June 19, at 7 a.m., with return times to be determined.

The event is being hosted by VFW organizations in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties.

Summer reading club starts

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Free Library is kicking off the summer reading club June 21. The kick off will include a visit from Smokey the Bear. The theme this year is “Dream Big” for infants to children age 12 and “Own the Night” for teens 13-18. The summer reading club is from 4 to 5 p.m., with other events on June 28, July 5, July 12, July 19 and July 26. Registration begins on the first day of the program. Prizes will be given out at a to-be-determined date in July.

Fiesta at San Juan Mission

SAN JUAN – On June 24, Old Mission San Juan Bautista will celebrate the bi-centennial dedication of its church with a fiesta, acknowledging Native American, Mexican, Spanish, Franciscan and settlers’ influence on the Central California area.

At 11 a.m., led by Azteca dancers and religious banners, priest and people will reverence the 200th anniversary with a procession from the church, through downtown and into the mission’s Historic Olive Grove. This kicks off a multi-cultural, family-oriented fiesta. All are welcome to enjoy on-stage entertainment continuing until 5 p.m. with mariachi music, singers, traditional and contemporary Mexican music and dancing. There will be historic displays, a visit by Bishop Garcia, costumed participants, food, beverages, games and activities for all ages. The traditional chicken barbecue is not to be missed. This fiesta promises to be a grand celebration of this unique bi-centennial.

Admission and stage entertainment is free. Tickets for food, games and activities are priced so all can enjoy the event. Visit the museum and church for a small donation. The gift shop will be open as well.

Nominations wanted for Sacred Heart award

HOLLISTER – Sacred Heart School Foundation is again seeking nominations for its Hall of Distinction award, which is presented annually in November during the Celebrating Catholic Education dinner at San Juan Oaks. Alumni, friends, faculty or staff members, current parents, board members and parishioners can make nominations. Once an individual has been nominated he or she will remain eligible for three years.

Nomination forms can be found in the church vestibule of Sacred Heart, St. Benedict, Immaculate Conception and the San Juan Mission, as well as the Sacred Heart School office and Sacred Heart pastoral office.

The deadline for nominations is June 30. Awards will be given out Nov. 3.

Storytelling and indigenous gathering

HOLLISTER – The 16th annual Storytelling and Indigenous Gathering, a fundraiser for Indian Canyon, will be held June 30. Wag ’n Walk

HOLLISTER- The fourth annual Wag ’n Walk 5K family fun run and walk is June 16, at Graniterock Southside Sand & Gravel, 5632 Airline Hwy., in Hollister. Registration open for Kids Rule

HOLLISTER – San Benito Stage Company’s Kids Rule Theatre Camp is accepting registration for the program, scheduled June 25-29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp is open to girls and boys ages 6 to 13. Work permits available

HOLLISTER – Students between the ages of 12 and 18 who plan to work with summer will need to have a permit to employ and work on file with their employers. Work permits can be picked up at the student’s school of attendance. Students under the age of 14 are only allowed to work in agriculture-related businesses or the entertainment field.

Applications for students attending rural schools can be obtained from the principal. Students are urged to process their applications before school is out for summer.

Students not attending a public school can direct inquiries to the San Benito County Office of Education, 460 Fifth St., in Hollister.

Registration open for Gavilan College

HOLLISTER – Gavilan College is accepting registration for new and returning students who have completed high school for summer and fall classes. Open registration started May 14, with summer classes starting on June 11. Fall classes start Aug. 29.

To register, new students will need to submit an application, available at all Gavilan College locations and online; create a MyGav account and get a student ID number at www.gavilan.edu; take a placement assessment test for English and math; complete in-person or online orientation; go to counseling for registration assistance; register online or in person; make payment of $46 per unit for California residents. Si, Se Puede takes registration for summer, seeks activity leader

HOLLISTER – The Si, Se Puede Learning Center is seeking a site activity leader to work with kids between the ages of 5 and 13. The applicant must be 18 years of age, a US citizen or legal resident, a college student and able to commit to a six-month term from April to September 2012. Those hired will receive a monthly living allowance that totals $2,590 for the six months and an educational award of $1,175 upon completion of the program.

The center is also taking sign ups for its summer program. The program runs June 11 through Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $35 per week, per child for residents of the Villa Luna Apartments ($10 per week for additional siblings.) The cost is $70 per week per child for non residents ($20 per week for additional siblings.)

Hollister Hills offers educational opportunities

HOLLISTER – The interpretation department at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area is gearing up to provide a variety of educational opportunities through the parks curriculum-based education program and its Junior Off-Highway Ranger adventure. The free programs offer educational, inspirational and recreational opportunities. The program will expose students to the various topics concerning the environment, cultural preservation, OHV safety and OHV recreational opportunities.

In addition to the outdoor program, Hollister Hills SVRA staff members will be holding a Junior Off-Highway Ranger program. The free program will provide participants the opportunities to reinforce safe riding habits, improve and enhance their skills and riding etiquette while learning about the importance of protecting natural and cultural resources.

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross, Monterey Bay Area Chapter is looking for volunteers to staff the Hollister chapter office.
