Break Threw Baseball, a free baseball fundamentals clinic, will be held Saturday at the Babe Ruth fields at Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister.

Hosted by Justin Patton, who pitched at West Valley College, and Adam Lara, who played infield at West Valley, the free clinic will run from 1 to 4 p.m.

Patton and Lara will be just two of 10 instructors expected to be in attendance on Saturday. Boomer Richer (pitcher/catcher from West Valley College), Jason Codiroli (outfielder/pitcher from West Valley), Jeff Stream (infield/outfield from West Valley), John Shaffer (infield/outfield from San Jose State) and Teddy Saenz (infield from West Valley and Centenary colleges) are also expected to be at the clinic.

Additionally, Carlos Hernandez (pitcher from West Valley in the Oakland Athletics organization), David Berner (pitcher from San Jose State in the Houston Astros organization) and David Newton (pitcher from West Valley in the San Francisco Giants organization) will be in attendance.

San Juan Oaks to host special golf clinic

San Juan Oaks and Extraordinary Golf will host a special golf clinic on Nov. 1 for players looking to learn, play and enjoy the game from an Extraordinary Golf point of view.

The clinic will be taught by Garry Lester, a San Juan Bautista resident for more than 10 years, who has been working with Extraordinary Golf creator Fred Shoemaker since 1992. Extraordinary Golf has been listed as one of Golf Magazine’s top 25 golf schools in the country for more than a decade.

Cost is $100 and all proceeds will go directly to Kelly Freitas, who is San Juan Oaks Director of Golf Manny Freitas’ wife. Kelly Freitas is battling breast cancer and all proceeds will help pay for required medical expenses.

Big Sur half marathon slated for Nov. 15

The Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay will take place on Nov. 15 in downtown Monterey and Pacific Grove.

Approximately 7,000 runners and walkers will participate in a 13.1-mile half marathon and 10-mile event along the scenic Monterey Bay coastline with live music along the course. A Health and Fitness Expo will take place Nov. 13 and 14 at the Monterey Conference Center and two smaller races for children and families will take place on Nov. 14 from Cannery Row to Pacific Grove.

Bolado Park announces junior golf program

Bolado Park Golf Club announced the Junior Bolado Ball Bashers Club, a golf program open to juniors 17 years of age or younger.

The program includes junior golf clinics, select free range-ball days, reduced rates for select play-days on the course and junior tournaments. Cost is $25 for membership.

San Juan Oaks to host PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament

San Juan Oaks Golf Club will host a first stage PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament from Oct. 27-30. A field of 80 players will compete for four days with the ultimate goal of achieving their PGA Tour cards and becoming eligible to enter PGA events. San Juan Oaks has served as a PGA Tour Stage One qualifying site since 2001.

Though it is a long journey from Stage One to the PGA Tour, there are success stories. Several players who competed at San Juan Oaks over the years have gone on to compete on the PGA Tour, including Kevin Na, John Mallinger, Scott Hend and Arron Oberholser.

Running club to host Halloween walk and run event

The Gavilan Joggers and Striders club will host the 17th Annual Halloween XVII 5K and 10K Run/Walk on Oct. 24 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy.

Soccer team to host alumni game

The San Benito High boys soccer program will host an alumni game on Nov. 28 at the SBHS varsity soccer field at 11 a.m.

Cost is $30 for alumni and sign-up is limited to the first 20 players. Price includes a T-shirt and refreshments. All proceeds will go to the Baler Backers program.

The 32nd annual Monterey Wrestling Clinic of Champions for Coaches will be held Oct. 23-25 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Seaside.

Seaside PAL to host benefit celebrity football game

Members of the Seaside Police Officers’ Association will be playing NFL celebrities in a charity football game on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the Seaside High School football field.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Seaside Police Activities League, which provides youth of the community with recreational and educational activities such as Junior Giants baseball, youth soccer, youth basketball, track and field, after school tutoring and summer reading. Seaside PAL also supports the Police Cadet Program.

Past NFL celebrities have included Bubba Paris, Dwight Clark and Roger Craig. Some of the players expected this year include Guy McIntyre, who played for the 49ers and holds three Super Bowl rings, and Mervyn “Swervin” Fernandez, who played for the Oakland Raiders.

Gates open at 1 p.m. with a $20 donation requested for adults. Children under 18 are free. Players will be available for autographs after the game.

Manta Rays open to new members

The Manta Rays swim team has room for five more swimmers who would like to accomplish something substantial in the sport of swimming and are willing to work for it. Practices are held in Hollister, with competitions throughout the region.

The Manta Rays are a nonprofit, competitive swim team for those who desire to be the best possible swimmers.

Balers wrestling to have dinner fundraiser

The San Benito High wrestling team is hosting Takedown Fundraising Dinner Night on Saturday, Oct. 24, to kickoff the 2009-10 wrestling season. All proceeds will go to the wrestling program.

Alumni wrestlers or just fans of the wrestling program itself are welcome to attend.

The event will be held at The Immaculate Conception Church Hall, located at 7290 Airline Highway in Tres Pinos, from 5 to 9 p.m. The fundraising dinner, which will be buffet style and will include dessert, costs $15 per person, $25 per couple.

YMCA soccer program slated for October

The YMCA of San Benito County soccer program will be for boys and girls ages two and a half to five years old. The second session is scheduled from Oct. 24-Dec.12. The soccer program will be held on Saturday mornings. Cost is $45 per session.

The YMCA’s programs are to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values through caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
