HOLLISTER

The Hollister Volleyball Club is scheduled to commence its inaugural season Nov. 6 with tryouts for girls ages 12U to 17U.

“HVC welcomes all girls who want to grow not only as a player, but as an individual,” said Kellie Kennedy, spokesperson for the club. “Players will learn both the fundamentals of the game as well as the mental aspects.”

All teams will compete in an area league, which includes a series of six tournaments: a single-day regional qualifier with a minimum of four matches; four single-day league tournaments; and an end-of-season, two-day regional championship. Teams will also compete in up to four specialty tournaments, which will be located throughout the Bay Area and Reno, Nev.

“Not ever playing club ball before is not a reason to not tryout, it is a reason to try,” Kennedy said. “Taking that chance and becoming part of a team that strives for a common goal is something that no girl should pass up.”

All tryouts will be held at Anzar High School, located in San Juan Bautista. Girls age 11 to 14 will tryout from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, and 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Girls age 15 to 17 will tryout from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and will continue Sunday from 12 to 2:30 p.m.

The cost is $15 and all girls will receive a Hollister Volleyball Club T-shirt.

Committee seeks funds for Anzar football program

In an effort to field a football team by fall 2011, as well as remain cost neutral to the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District, a new fundraising committee at Anzar High School is seeking approximately $25,000 for initial start-up costs by December of this year.

The Football Fundraising Committee is focusing on community members and local businesses to make pledges to a football program at Anzar, which would be a first for the San Juan Bautista high school.

The initial $25,000 price tag would help pay for uniforms, helmets and other equipment for the team, as well as help pay for coaches stipends, referees and league dues.

Anzar already boasts a football field, equipped with goal posts and an electronic scoreboard, thanks to the San Benito Cardinals of American Youth Football and Cheer.

If you would like to donate, all pledges, in any amount, can be sent to:

Anzar Football Fundraising Committee

2300 San Juan Highway

San Juan Bautista, Calif., 95045

Note:

Donor should provide name, address and phone number and amount of his/her pledge. Pledges will be collected after Jan. 1, 2011.
