The event is named after P.J. Galvan, a former Haybaler who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2003.

The Alumni Classic will include a home run derby at 4:30 p.m., and is limited to the first 15 entrants.

The alumni game, which will pit baseball alumni from San Benito High School against members from the current varsity team, will commence at 6 p.m.

Former players expected to be in attendance include Nick Bakich, Nick Ramos, Dave Ortiz, Lou Urbina, Andrew Barragan, Kolten Klauer, Breyon Canez, Miles Sanchez, Eric Diaz, Justin Andrade, Anthony Synegal, Nick Gonzales and Dave Padilla.

Cost to play for former players is $25, and includes a T-shirt, while gate admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

Proceeds benefit the SBHS baseball program, as well as the team’s baseball scholarship fund.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Ramiro Chapa and Kyle Zozaya.

Barnstormers to play Saturday at Vallejo High School for championship

As champions of the National Conference, the Central Coast Barnstormers (11-1) will square off against the North Bay Rattlers (11-1) Saturday at Vallejo High School for the Northern California Football League championship.

Kick-off is at 6 p.m., at Corbus Field.

Allen continues track season at the Golden West invite

Courtney Allen is expected to run in the 1,600-meter event at the Adidas Golden West Invitational on Saturday at Folsom High School.

The 1,600 is slated for 7 p.m.

Tri County Running Club slated for June 15

Runners of all ages looking to stay in shape and run some races during the summer months can join the Tri County Running Club, which will be held from June 15 to Aug. 7.

The club will meet at 9 a.m. three times a week: Mondays at Manzanita Park in Prunedale, Wednesdays at Toro Park in Salinas and Fridays at Nisene Marks Park in Aptos.

There will also be an afternoon session at San Benito High School in Hollister every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m., as well as a kids’ group at Castroville School on Wednesdays and Fridays at noon.

Cost is $75, or $25 for kids 12 and under. Cost includes a club T-shirt and uniform use.

Hollister cowboy, cowgirl qualify to CNFR and NHSRA Wrangler rodeo

Wes Nelson and Kristy Melton of San Benito County each qualified to national rodeo competitions in their respective divisions recently.

Nelson, a junior at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, qualified toward the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., from June 14-20.

Competing in the team roping event, Nelson makes his first trip to the CNFR.

Meanwhile, Kristy Melton was recently named the girls’ All-Around Champion for the year by the California Junior High School Rodeo Association.

Melton, an eighth-grader at Tres Pinos School, took first in goat tying, eighth in team roping and fifth in ribbon roping.

Melton will compete in the goat tying event at the Fifth Annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo, scheduled for June 28 through July 4 in Gallup, N.M.

Everett Alvarez to host volleyball camp in July

The volleyball program of Everett Alvarez High School will host the Second Everett Alvarez Girls’ Volleyball Camp for middle school athletes on July 15-17 from 2 to 5 p.m. This camp is designed for girls entering sixth through eighth grade who are interested in improving their volleyball skills. The camp will provide certified and qualified volleyball coaches and will feature some outstanding high school players from the local area.

Enrollment into the camp is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Cost of the camp is $60 and includes nine hours of instruction and a camp T-shirt.

Registration deadline is June 30. Late registration will be accepted if space is available after June 30 with a $15 late fee. On-site registration will also be allowed (pending availability).

San Juan Oaks to host spring, summer golf clinics

The San Juan Oaks Golf Club will host five golf clinics through the spring and summer months, where golfers can fine-tune specific areas of their game to help improve scores.

One clinic will be offered each month, with clinics focused on chipping (June 20), sand shots (July 18), full swing (Aug. 22), putting (Sept. 26) and pitch shots (Oct. 17).

Classes will be held on Saturdays from 12 to 1 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.

Challenger Sports, YMCA team up for June soccer camp

Challenger Sports and the YMCA of San Benito County have teamed up to host the British Soccer camp from June 22-26 at Rancho San Justo Middle School in Hollister.

An additional camp will be held from July 6-10.

Each child will be coached by a member of the Challenger’s British coaching staff flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. In addition to taking part in a daily regime of foot skill development, technical and tactical practices and daily tournament style plays, each child will also be treated to a rich cultural experience and lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship.

The YMCA of San Benito County and British Soccer will offer four different sessions, including First Kicks (ages 3-4 from 9 to 10 a.m.; Cost is $75); Mini Soccer (ages 4-5 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; Cost is $80); Half Day (ages 6-17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Cost is $120); and Full Day (ages 10-17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.; Cost is $175).

Each camper will receive a free T-shirt, soccer ball, soccer poster and an individual skills performance evaluation. In addition, any child who signs up online at least 45 days prior to camp will receive a genuine British Soccer replica jersey.

The YMCA will be starting their summer basketball league in June for grades 1-5. The season will run from June 20 to Aug. 8. Games will be on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rancho San Justo. Cost is $75 for seven weeks.

Additionally, the YMCA will also be starting karate on Mondays and Wednesdays for those 8 years old and above (monthly cost is $50); T-ball on on Saturdays from June 13-July 11 at Maze Middle School for those 2 and a half to 5 years old (cost is $40); and track and field on Saturdays from June 13-July 11 at Maze Middle School for those 2 and a half to 5 years old (cost is $40).

Rising Stars to host underclass baseball showcase in June

Rising Stars will be holding a baseball showcase at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton on June 13. This showcase is open to all underclass baseball players graduating in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Players will receive an unbiased evaluation by pro scouts and college scouts on their hitting, running, throwing and pitching. Top rated players will be selected to play in the Rising Stars All-Star game that same day.
