Traditional Portuguese sopas will be served at the hall at 11 a.m., with an auction and dance to follow.

Retirement party for Juan Robledo

HOLLISTER – A retirement party for Juan Robledo, who has taught at San Benito High School for 39 years, will be held June 9, at the Bolado Park Pavilion. Dog Days of Hollister

HOLLISTER – The Dog Days of Hollister event is set for June 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Dunne Park, West and Sixth streets, with additional parking available in the Briggs building parking garge. The annual event will include a pooch parade, doggie contests, demonstrations, vendors and more. Well-behaved dogs that are 6 months or older are invited to attend on leash and with proof of a rabies vaccination. Tickets are $5 for adults or $3 with a donation of dog food. ‘Disney Jr.’s Beauty and the Beast’

HOLLISTER – First-grade through eighth-grade students at Spring Grove School will perform Disney Jr.’s “Beauty and the Beast” May 17 at 7 p.m. and May 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show is open to the general public. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-years-old through 12th grade and free for children 5 and under. The show will be at Spring Grove School, 500 Spring Grove Road. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.     

San Benito County Rural schools art show

HOLLISTER – Southside School, Tres Pinos School and Cienega School, under the direction of art teacher Jen Rodriguez, will be having a student artwork showcase at the San Benito County Free Library on April 29 through May 13. Please come out to the library and check out all the creative and interesting art pieces the students have created. See everything from oil pasteled “Illuminated Letters” to water-colored “Enchanted Forests.”

Strengthening special families parent training

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Office of Education Special Education Department and Easter Seals Central California are hosting training sessions every Wednesday in May, from 6 to 8 p.m., at 1011 Line St., Room 11. The May 15 session is on enhancing parent-child relationships; May 22 is on local resources and parent advocacy skills; and May 29 will be a family fun event. Funding for the program is provided by the Community Foundation for San Benito County and First 5 San Benito County. Childcare is available.

HOLLISTER – Southside and Tres Pinos schools will host a talent show May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Southside School Gym. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children. Concessions and flowers will be available for purchase. Students will perform songs, dances, magic and more.

Pizza in the Grove

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association will host Pizza in the Grove May 17, from 5:30 to 10 p.m., at Leal Vineyards, 300 Maranatha Drive, in Hollister. Backpack project collections begin

HOLLISTER – The Women’s Club of Hollister is accepting donations for its backpack project. The project supplies backpacks full of needed supplies to children from infants to 17 years who are taken from their homes and placed in alternative living conditions through no fault of their own. The backpacks are filled with age and gender specific basic toiletries, school supplies, a stuffed animal and a handmade blanket. The backpacks have been donated to San Benito County Child Protective Services, the Emmaus House women’s shelter, Chamberlain’s Children Center and the San Benito County Chapter of the Kinship Center. Red Barn Run

HOLLISTER – The Red Barn Run will be June 9, at 9 a.m., at Casa de Fruta. The annual 5K and 10K run benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Registration includes the race, a post-race barbecue lunch with water or a beer (for 21 and older participants,) a dry wicking t-shirt and a medal for every finisher. Get rid of bulky items

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency will accept two bulky items per household free of charge on select dates this year. Suggested items for disposal include furniture, appliances, tires or other items. To participate, residents must bring a driver license or ID that identifies them as a resident of San Benito County or its incorporated cities. The bulky item collections dates for 2013 are June 29 and 30, Sept. 28 and 29, and Dec. 28 and 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at John Smith Landfill, 2650 John Smith Road.
