San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister announced this week that Manny Freitas has been named the new director of golf and Alfonso Castillo has been named as San Juan Oaks’ new head golf professional.
“Manny and Alfonso form a great team that will take San Juan Oaks’ golf operation, and particularly our customer service, to the next level,” said Scott Fuller, general manager of San Juan Oaks, in a press release.
Freitas has been a part of San Juan Oaks Golf Club since 1996 when the facility first opened. He spent the past seven years as assistant general manager and director of marketing at the club, which included the creation and implementation of marketing programs, and tournament and event management.
Castillo, meanwhile, has been associated with San Juan Oaks since 2006, and most recently served as San Juan Oaks’ first assistant golf professional. He recently graduated from the Professional Golfers Career College in Temecula, and is enrolled in the PGA Class A certification program.
San Juan Oaks will host the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament from Oct. 25-30.
Aromas’ Deleissegues named student-athlete of the week at Seattle University
By helping the Seattle University volleyball team win two of its three matches at last weekend’s Pepperdine Asics Classic, junior libero Emily Deleissegues of Aromas has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.
Deleissegues, a 2009 Anzar High graduate, finished with 38 defensive digs over the weekend, averaging 4.22 digs per set. She started the weekend by notching 14 digs against then-19th ranked Pepperdine. Deleissegues contributed to the team’s sweep over UC Riverside by collecting a match-high 17 digs, and she followed that up with seven digs in SeattleU’s three-set victory over Army on Sunday.
For the season, Deleissegues leads the team with 127 digs, averaging 3.97 digs per set. She is currently fourth among players from independent schools in total digs and third in digs per set. She notched a season-high 18 digs in Seattle’s four-set match against Wisconsin at the Active Ankle Challenge on Sept. 5.
“Emily had a nice weekend anchoring our defense in the backcourt. She was steady both emotionally and intellectually and is beginning to understand how her role fits within the framework of our system,” acting head coach Teron Uy said in a press release. “We’ll need her to continue improving incrementally as we head into our upcoming matches.”
In her freshman season, Deleissegues collected 352 defensive digs, the seventh-highest single-season total in program history. Her average of 4.82 digs per set that season is the fourth-highest mark in a single season in Seattle University history. With 648 career digs, she is currently tenth on the SeattleU all-time digs list and is just 15 digs away from moving into ninth place.
Majoring in business management with a minor in Spanish, Deleissegues is carrying a 3.739 grade point average.
Balers wrestling to have dinner fundraiser
The San Benito High wrestling team is hosting Takedown Fundraising Dinner Night on Saturday, Oct. 24, to kickoff the 2009-10 wrestling season. All proceeds will go to the wrestling program.
Alumni wrestlers or just fans of the wrestling program itself are welcome to attend.
The event will be held at The Immaculate Conception Church Hall, located at 7290 Airline Highway in Tres Pinos, from 5 to 9 p.m. The fundraising dinner, which will be buffet style and will include dessert, costs $15 per person, $25 per couple.
There will be a 50/50 raffle.

Aromas’ Boyles, Hollister’s Han fare well at NCGA opener
The first Fall Series championship of the NCGA Junior Tour saw an array of fresh faces in the winner’s circle at Pajaro Valley last Sunday.
In the Boys’ Net event, for players in both the Championship and First Flights, Shintaro Ban of San Jose won with a net two-under-par 142. Tharusyan Pillay of San Jose took second place after a card-off at 142 and Josh Boyles of Aromas finished in third with 143.
In the Boys’ Championship Flight, Hollister’s Ryan Han carded a 156 (76-80) to finish 26th overall.
The NCGA Junior Tour makes its next stop at Haggin Oaks GC in Sacramento, Sept. 19-20.
Garcia signs on with Philadelphia Eagles
Just a little more than a week after being released by the Oakland Raiders, Gilroy native Jeff Garcia agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.
Garcia played for the Eagles in 2006 and went 6-2.
The move comes after the Eagles announced starting quarterback Donovan McNabb suffered a broken rib during Sunday’s 38-10 victory over Carolina.
McNabb is not expected to play this weekend against New Orleans. Eagles backup Kevin Kolb is scheduled to start.
Youth basketball league sign-ups
Boys and girls from third- through eighth-grade are invited to register for the 2009-2010 season of Hollister National Junior Basketball (NJB) on Sept. 28. This will be Hollister NJB’s ninth season of competition.
Hollister teams play a majority of their games at San Benito High School and occasionally travel to south San Jose for Sunday games during the regular season. Mandatory play rules are enforced, so all players play at least half of every game.
The $250 registration fee includes a uniform, picture package, a minimum of 10 games and two hours of practice per week.
Teams are grouped by gender and grade level (third/fourth grade; fifth/sixth grade; and seventh/eighth grade) and everyone who signs up will be placed on a team.
Registration will be held Monday, Sept. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bertha Briggs House, 1221 Memorial Drive near the skateboard facility at Veterans Memorial Park.

YMCA announces sign-ups for new sports
The YMCA of San Benito County recently announced sign-ups for three sports, including soccer and the YMCA’s Sharks and Parks Youth Hockey League program.
The youth hockey league is for boys and girls in grades first through eighth – there will be three divisions – and is tentatively slated to begin Sept. 19 at the basketball courts at Veterans Memorial Park. Cost is $80.
The YMCA soccer program will be for boys and girls ages two and a half to five years old. The second session is scheduled from Oct. 24-Dec.12. The soccer program will be held on Saturday mornings. Cost is $45 per session.
The YMCA’s programs are to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values through caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

San Juan Oaks hosting summer golf clinics
The San Juan Oaks Golf Club has two remaining golf clinics for the summer, where golfers can fine-tune specific areas of their game to help improve scores.
One clinic will be offered each month, with remaining clinics focused on putting (Sept. 26) and pitch shots (Oct. 17).
Classes will be held on Saturdays from 12 to 1 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.
