Gavilan College registration
Gavilan College is accepting registration for new and returning students who have completed high school for summer and fall classes. Open registration starts May 14, with summer classes starting on June 11. Fall classes start Aug. 29.
To register, new students will need to submit an application, available at all Gavilan College locations and online; create a MyGav account and get a student ID number at www.gavilan.edu; take a placement assessment test for English and math; complete in-person or online orientation; go to counseling for registration assistance; register online or in person; make payment of $46 per unit for California residents. The schedule of classes is available online. In-person registration will be held May 1-24, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Fridays, at the Briggs Building in Hollister. Poppy Week
The VFW Auxiliary Post No. 9242 and American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 69 will kick off Poppy Week May 13-19. The official Poppy Day is May 18, when residents are asked to observe the day by wearing a poppy. The flower is an emblem of sacrifice made by veterans and the crepe paper flowers are made by disabled veterans in 40 states. The proceeds will go to Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. Poppy posters will be up in participating businesses.VFW members will be at the Hollister Post Office, Safeway and Nob Hill to sell the paper flowers.
Hollister’s Got Talent
Mini Max Storage & RV will be hosting its Annual Hollister’s Got Talent 2012. Please join to get a chance to be named ‘Hollister’s Most Talented 2012’! Registration will be accepted at Mini Max Storage 2450 San Juan Road, in Hollister, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The deadline to register is June 5. Rib Cook-Off
San Juan Bautista will host the annual Best Ribs in the West competition May 19 and 20 on Third Street, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Six teams will be vying for the title. Admission is free to the public and food will be for sale. Visitors can get in on the action by casting a vote for the People’s Choice Award on Saturday. Official judging will take place Saturday at 3 p.m., with winners announced Sunday at 1 p.m. There will be arts and craft booths as well as entertainment. Details: 775-324-6435.
Heroes dinner
The Monterey Chapter of the American Red Cross, which includes San Benito county, will recognize local individuals for extraordinary acts of courage at the annual Heroes Dinner Celebration, May 19, at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey. Details: www.arcmontereybay.org or 626-5251.
Prevention Plus
A Prevention Plus seminar titled “Epigenetics: Your DNA is not your Destiny!” will be held May 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the YMCA office, 351 Tres Pinos Road, Ste. A-201. The speaker will be Paulette Suzanne of Whole Person Health Services in Pacific Grove, will discuss diet and genes along with other topics. Portuguese Fest
The SDES Portuguese Hall will host the “Queen Coronation” and dance May 26, at 9 p.m., 695 Seventh St., followed by the parade May 27, at 10 a.m., from the hall to Sacred Heart Church for an 11 a.m. mass. Preschool picnic
The Presbyterian Preschool will host its end-of-year picnic May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. the event will include games for the children, jump houses, raffle items and a bake sale.
