The San Benito Babe Ruth baseball league is currently conducting sign-ups this week, and is looking for players ages 16-18 for Senior Babe Ruth.

Cost is $150.

The season runs from May through June, with the possibility of extending through July for All-Stars.

Sign-ups are being held at the Babe Ruth snack bar at Veterans Memorial Park today, Friday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local boxing gym owner seeks donations for yard sale

Zeke Lopez, who runs the non-profit Bulldog Boxing Gym in Hollister, had his house burn down on Sunday, and is looking to raise funds as a result.

Currently staying at a motel, Lopez and his family is planning on holding a yard sale this Saturday, April 16, and are seeking donations to be sold.

The yard sale will be held at the Bulldog Boxing Gym, located on the corner of McCray and Gibbs streets in Hollister. Starting at 8 a.m., the yard sale is expected to last all day.

The California Rodeo Salinas’ Hall of Fame strives to preserve the heritage, history and traditions of the California Rodeo Salinas along with showcasing individuals, organizations and livestock whose distinctive contributions to the California Rodeo Salinas have helped keep the traditions of the West alive.

Categories were developed for nominees and include Livestock, Contestants, Contract Personnel, Committee Members (including Directors, Past Presidents), Staff, Supporters and Contributors and Notables.

An induction luncheon will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2011. The ticket price for the annual induction is $30 per person and includes lunch and drinks during the induction ceremony. Gavilan College Communication Club conducting prize raffle

The Gavilan College Communication Club is currently selling tickets for a prize raffle that will raise money for funding student scholarships and events.

Each ticket is $1 and the prizes are as follows: Two tickets to the May 21 game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s at AT&T Park; a $100 gift card to Victoria’s Secret; and a his or hers Calvin Klein fragrance gift set.

SBHS softball team to conduct tri-tip fundraiser

The San Benito High softball team is conducting a tri-tip fundraiser in an effort to raise funds for equipment and future tournaments.

The program has set up a pre-sale tri-tip fundraiser for $20, with a pick-up date scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at the San Benito High tennis courts from 3 to 6 p.m.

San Juan Oaks to host West Coast Conference Golf Championships

San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister announced recently it will host the West Coast Conference Golf Championships for both the men’s and women’s divisions this spring.

Practice rounds will be held Sunday, April 17, while competitive rounds begin Monday, April 18 and end on Tuesday, April 19.

The West Coast Conference is made up of eight member schools, including Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary’s, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara, with each school represented by a men’s golf team.

As for the women’s golf teams, six universities are represented, including Pepperdine, USF, Santa Clara, Gonzaga, Portland and Seattle University, which is an affiliate member of the WCC for this season.

Each team consists of five players.

Last season, the Pepperdine women’s golf team was ranked ninth in the nation and No. 1 in the WCC behind Player of the Year Danielle Kang, while the Pepperdine men’s team also earned the WCC Championship trophy a year ago as well.

Santa Clara’s Scott Travers earned Player of the Year honors in the WCC last season, and also won the California State Amateur Championship in San Diego.

San Juan Oaks expects the event to bring visitors from all over the West Coast to enjoy the tournament and the surrounding areas.

Local lifters to raise funds for Baler Backers

Gold’s Gym is scheduled to host the Hollister Powerlifting Championships Fundraiser, with all the proceeds raised going to the Baler Backers Athletic Organization, a 501 c(3) nonprofit that benefits the San Benito High School Athletic Department.

The event, which will include competitions in deadlift, bench press and squats, will be open to anyone ages 14 and up. It’s a “raw” competition, meaning no gear will be allowed.

The event will be broken down into brackets between men and women and weight class, and will include divisions from the junior levels to the masters. Individuals can compete in one division or all three. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place in each division and weight class.

For teenagers, the preregistration entry fee is $20 for each event, $30 for each on the day of the event. For adults, the preregistration fee is $30 for each event, $40 for each on the day of the event.

Additionally, competition T-shirts are $15 during preregistration and $20 on the day of the event.

The event will be held Saturday, May 21, at Gold’s Gym, and will start at 9 a.m. Weigh-ins will run from 6 to 8 a.m. There is a cover charge of $5, while kids 12 and under will be admitted for free.

Entry forms can be picked up at Gold’s Gym in Hollister, located at 1525 Cushman Street.

The event is currently looking for sponsors.

MMA event to return to Hollister

Just four months after Hollister hosted what was believed to be its first-ever mixed martial arts event, organizers have already announced a second go-round into the local MMA scene with War 2.

The MMA event, promoted by Central Coast Throwdown and Main Street Kickboxing, will be held May 6 at the Veterans Memorial Building, located at 649 San Benito Street in downtown Hollister.

Although an official fight card was not available at press time, the event’s flyer promotes “10 ultimate battles, 1 championship war.”

Tickets will cost $30 for the event, and can be purchased at Main Street Kickboxing in Hollister, Big Joe’s BBQ in Salinas, or at the DJ Booth in Salinas. VIP info, meanwhile, can be had by calling (831) 580-7868, or by going online to: www.ccthrowdown.com

Fights for the May 6 event will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.

War 2 comes nearly four months after even promoters held Fightin’ on the Faultline at the Veterans Memorial Building, which took place Jan. 8 and was greeted with capacity crowds.

YMCA still holding sign-ups for T-ball

The YMCA of San Benito County is still holding sign-ups for T-ball for preschoolers.

The T-ball program is for participants ages 2.5 to 5 years old, and is designed to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The program will run at Dunne Park in Hollister (located downtown off Seventh Street) on Saturdays from April 30 to June 4.

Cost is $45. Financial assistance is available.
