three programs, including T-ball, preschool basketball and middle

The YMCA of San Benito County recently announced the start of three programs, including T-ball, preschool basketball and middle school sports for sixth- to eighth-grade students at Maze, Gabilan Hills and Calaveras middle schools.

The YMCA will be offering girls volleyball and boys flag football at Maze; girls soccer and boys basketball at Gabilan Hills; and girls soccer and boys basketball at Calaveras.

All sports start the week of Jan. 10, and sign-ups will be held at the YMCA, located at 351 Tres Pinos Road, Suite A-201 in Hollister.

The YMCA is offering afterschool sports with Maze, Gabilan Hills and Calaveras after the Hollister School District announced it would cut middle school sports beginning in January.

The YMCA is also offering a school-against-school T-ball program for six elementary schools within the Hollister School District. The program will also begin the week of Jan. 10.

Starting Saturday, Jan. 15, the YMCA will be running preschool basketball as well for players aged 2.5 to 5 years old.

Local MMA event set for Saturday

Fightin’ on the Faultline, an event promoters say is the first-ever mixed martial arts event to come to Hollister, will be held on Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Building, located at 649 San Benito Street.

The championship MMA series will feature 14 bouts, including a main event between Hollister’s Jared Hess and Sergio Machado.

Doors open to the event at 5 p.m., with the fights set to begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $40, and can be purchased at Main Street Kickboxing in Hollister or at Big Joe’s BBQ in Salinas. For more information, log on to: www.ccthrowdown.com

Mission 10 race set for Jan. 29

The 28th annual Mission 10 races will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Mission Plaza on Second Street in San Juan Bautista.

The event, which is a benefit for community service projects sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hollister, includes a 10-mile race at 10 a.m., a 5-kilometer race at 10:15 a.m., and the Elliott Swank Memorial 1-mile kids’ fun run at 9 a.m.

Race day registration begins at 8 a.m. The kids fun run is $5 (3 or more kids in the same family is $12), while all other runners are $22, if received by Jan. 25. Cost is $27 thereafter, and includes a long sleeve T-shirt (except for fun run).

Trophies will be awarded to the men and women winners of each race, with medals three deep in eight divisions. All participants of the kids’ fun run will receive a ribbon.

Hollister Little League to hold registrations

The Hollister Little League will be holding its final registration on Saturday at the Hollister Community Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hollister Heat to hold registrations

The Hollister Heat softball program will hold registration for the upcoming spring season today, Friday, at the YMCA Building, located at 351 Tres Pinos Road, Suite A-201.

Registration will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

Spring season includes six age divisions, including the Rookies (5 and 6 years old), Single-A (7 and 8 years old), Double-A (8 to 11 years old), Triple-A (10 to 13 years old), Majors (11 to 14 years old) and Seniors (14 to 18 years old).

Girls who are new to the Hollister Heat need to bring a copy of their birth certificate to the registration.

Babe Ruth to hold sign-ups on Saturday

San Benito Babe Ruth Baseball will hold sign-ups for the 2011 season in January for players aged 12 to 15 years old, as well as players aged 16 to 18 years old for Senior Babe Ruth.

Cost is $150 for both the spring and summer seasons, and $75 for summer season only.

The final sign-up will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Babe Ruth fields at Veterans Memorial Park. Those signing up are asked to bring a copy of their birth certificate and medical insurance information.

USYVL opens early registration for 2010-11 season

The United States Youth Volleyball League has opened registration for their upcoming Spring 2011 season.

This eight-week program, which is held at Paradise Park in Morgan Hill from April to June 2011, gets kids active and teaches the fundamentals of volleyball such as serving, passing, setting and spiking. The United States Youth Volleyball League offers several locations that are close to your home and/or school.

The league in Morgan Hill meets at Paradise Park, Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. The season begins April 7 and ends June 11, 2011.
