Volunteers needed: The 17th annual Street Festival will be held in downtown Hollister on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed and there is still space available in the classic car show. Call the Hollister Downtown Association to volunteer or to enter the show at 636-8406.

Children’s book drive: Girl Scout Troop No. 3473 of San Juan Bautista will hold a children’s book drive during the month of July to benefit San Juan preschools and day cares, San Juan School and city libraries.

The scouts will be accepting gently used picture books and children’s magazines Mondays and Wednesdays throughout July from 1:30-3 p.m. at the San Juan Bautista City Library

SBC Chamber members needed: The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce is looking for chamber members that would be interested in serving on the SBC Chamber Board. Anyone interested, please submit name, business name, address, telephone number and current e-mail address to the Chamber office or just call 637-5315. The deadline is July 31.

Scholastic book fair: Girl Scout Troop #3473 will hold a book fair from July 28 to Aug. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The “Clued into Reading” book fair will offer the most sought after titles in literature for every reader and Spanish selections. The book fair also offers school supplies, posters, stuffed animals, craft kits, computer games and more.

The fair will be held at San Juan Bautista Library and all proceeds will benefit the SJB City Library. Details: 623-4360.

Children’s program: The Aromas Branch of the Monterey County Free Libraries is hosting a children’s program given by Peter Meuse, Bluegrass and Banjos on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. Meuse has a strong singing voice that he accompanies with guitar, banjo and fiddle. This program is part of the Aromas Library’s Summer Reading Program “Reading is a Picnic.” Children are also invited to fill out reading logs and win prizes.

Bolado Charity Rodeo: The 10th annual Bolado Charity Rodeo will take place Aug. 23 and 24. Entry forms are available at local feed stores and must be postmarked by Aug. 1 to P.O. Box 2243, Hollister, CA, 95024. All proceeds benefit youth organizations in San Benito County. Details: 673-1399.

SJB Library garage sale: A garage sale benefiting the San Juan Bautista Library will be Sunday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual spaces are available for residents of San Benito County only – no vendors. Among the items offered include pizza, home-made pies, white elephant, old and new books along with a Scholastic book fair. All money made by individuals is theirs to keep. Get a table by Aug. 1.

Street closures in San Juan: In preparation for the 40th annual Antique & Collectible Flea Market the following streets will be closed to traffic from 2 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3: Third Street between Muckelemi and Franklin; Muckelemi between Second and Fourth; Polk between Second and Fourth; Mariposa between Second and Fourth; Washington between Second and Fourth; and Muckelemi on the business side from Second to Fourth. Vehicles will be towed at the vehicle owner’s expense. Details: 623-2454.

Family vacation Bible school: Hollister United Methodist Church is offering a family vacation bible school Aug. 3-7 from 5-7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served every evening. National Night Out: The Seventh Annual National Night Out will be held Aug. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. The community-oriented event stresses crime and drug prevention and is designed to strengthen the partnership between police and the community. Details: 636-4076.

Republican meeting: The San Benito County Republican Central Committee will meet on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at the county courthouse. Plans for the Aug. 16 Street Festival will be discussed.
