Local artists display The works of six student and alumni artists from Gavilan College are now on display through Feb. 4, 2009 at the Gavilan College Art Gallery, located in the campus library at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Themes include pride in homeland, explorations of cultural and gender identity, the subconscious, celestial abstractions and the promise of hope. Holiday Lights Train The 2008 Santa Cruz Holiday Lights Train is now open at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The one-hour trip through downtown Santa Cruz begins at 5 p.m. Guests can ride vintage excursion cars, adorned by thousands of colorful lights, sing along to seasonal carols while sipping hot-spiced cider, listen to musical entertainment, and enjoy visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus before returning to the boardwalk. Upon returning to the Boardwalk, festivities continue at Santa’s Kingdom (inside Neptune’s Kingdom). Ticket price includes choice of indoor “Holiday” miniature golf, game tokens for the holiday arcade, or Laser Tag.
Ticket prices are $22 for adults and $17 for children ages 3-12 years of age. There is an additional $5 parking fee at the boardwalk. The train will leave the boardwalk at 5 p.m. on the following dates: Dec. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 & 22.
CARMEL
Holiday concert The Monterey Symphony will present its annual Holiday concert, featuring guitarist David Tannenbaum, tonight beginning at 8 p.m. at Carmel’s Mission Basilica. Selections will include Vivaldi’s “Guitar Concerto in D Minor” as well as Conrad Susa’s “Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest.”

Pet Fair The 10th annual “Home 4 the Holidays” Pet Fair will be held today as part of the Pet Friends Holiday Open House today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pet Friends & Rescue shelter, 2975 Buena Vista Road. Festivities include free holiday treats, a gift basket raffle and a crafts and collectibles sale. Santa’s Holiday Boutique Spring Grove School will host its annual Santa’s Holiday Boutique today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school’s gym, located at 500 Spring Grove Road. Book shed sale The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library will hold a book shed sale today from 9 a.m. to noon at the shed behind the library, 470 Fifth St. Bags are $2 each and contain materials suitable for all ages and interests. New or used books, videos or tapes on subjects such as children, school, vehicles, houses, animals, mysteries, travel, spirituality, exercise, careers and art are available. Operation Emmanuel The First Presbyterian Church of Hollister presents “Operation Emmanuel,” an original work about the angel. Dinner and the show are free, though donations are accepted. Caroling tour The annual Caroling and Candlelight Tour will be held tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. Carolers should meet in front of the Mission and should be dressed warmly. Participants will enjoy the tradition of srolling through downtown San Juan Bautista singing Christmas carols. Refreshments will be served afterwards at the Plaza Hotel. This event is sponsored by the Historic State Park, the Plaza History Association and the San Juan Bautisa Chamber of Commerce. If it rains, singing and refreshments will be held at the Plaza Hotel. “Christmas in the Adobes” Twenty of Monterey’s most historic adobes will be featured in a variety of stories, musical entertainment, refreshments and period Christmas decorations during the annual “Christmas in the Adobes” tonight from 5-9 p.m. in historic downtown Monterey. Each historic building will have staff, docents and volunteers on hand to tell about the unique aspects of each building and share stories about their former occupants. Buildings to be featured include Casa Soberanes, the Stevenson House (the home of author Robert Louis Stevenson), the Larkin House, the Old Whaling Station, Casa Abrego and California’s First Theater.
Tickets for this event are now on sale. Admission is $20 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-17 years. Tickets are limited. “The Eight: Reindeer Monologues” The Paper Wing Theatre Company presents “The Eight: Reindeer Monologues” tonight at 8 p.m. at its playhouse, 320 Hoffman Ave. This dark comedy follows Santa’s reindeer and what happens when they accuse Santa of un-Christmas like behavior. “Christmas in the Park” Downtown San Jose’s annual Christmas in the Park holiday display is now open at Plaza de Cesar Chaves, on Market Street between San Carlos and San Fernando streets. The display will be open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight through Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009.
More than 60 musical and animated exhibits, including the 60-foot Community Giving Tree, are on display. Exhibits include the Lima Train, a Victorian Village surrounded by an animated Nutcracker suite exhibit and Santa’s House. Admission is free. Parking fees in city lots is reduced after 6 p.m. and on weekends.
