Oriana Chorale Spring Concert
Oriana Chorale’s concert titled Songs of the Heart, featuring love songs, including Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, folk songs from Scotland, England, and Ireland, and popular American hits from the 1930s to the 1970s, is set for May 15 and May 17. The location will be at the First Presbyterian Church, 2066 San Benito St. Times are 7:30 p.m. May 15 and 3 p.m. May 17. Gavilan presents ‘Evita’
Buy your tickets now for Gavilan College’s spring production of Evita. This production is in collaboration with Christopher High School and is starring professional actress Lexie Dorsett Sharp in the title role of Evita. Be sure to purchase your tickets now because prices will go up if purchased at the door. It is set for the Gavilan College Theater at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy on May 8, 9, 15 & 16 at 8 p.m. A matinee is set for 2 p.m. May 9. Stage company auditions
The San Benito Stage Company is presenting a free audition workshop set for 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Granada Theatre, 336 Fifth St. It is a “How to Audition—Cast Me! Theatre” session. The stage company advises people to pick the right song and make an impression. It is for ages 6 and up. The instructor is Dennis Beasley. Downtown Farmers Market
The Downtown Hollister Certified Farmers’ Market is every Wednesday from 3 p.m.-7:30 p.m. through Sept. 30. Located on San Benito Street between Fourth and Seventh streets, it includes such items as fresh produce, flowers, organic meat and poultry, specialty baked goods (including gluten free), local olive oils, honey, sausages, barbecue items, free entertainment, culinary demonstrations and more. July 4 block parties
Anyone wishing to close a street in the City of Hollister (a public right of way) for a block party at any time, but especially for 4th of July celebrations, must have permission from the City of Hollister. Applications are available in the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 375 Fifth St., Hollister, or by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (831) 636-4300, x 16 or 17. Applicants must submit a completed application for a block party as well as an executed hold harmless agreement, both of which are available from the City Clerk’s Office, as well as a certificate of insurance naming the City of Hollister as an additional insured. Certificates of insurance are usually available from a resident’s home owners insurance company. Normally a request is required to be submitted 30 days prior to an event. However, due to increased requests for 4th of July permits and scheduled City Council meetings, all completed applications for this 4th of July must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office no later than Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 5 p.m. For more, call Christine Black at (831) 636-4300, ext. 16.
Portuguese Festival
This year’s Portuguese Celebration in Hollister is set for May 23 and May 24, according to one of the organizers, Anthony Silva. Every year, Hollister’s Portuguese community celebrates over two days of festivities in the late spring. The Queen Coronation and dance are at 9 p.m. May 23 with the parade traditionally starting at 10 a.m. the following day. The parade starts at the SDES Hall and proceeds to Sacred Heart Church for the 11 a.m. mass. Also on that Sunday, people are invited to the meal after church, with traditional Portuguese sopas served.
Mission Fiesta
Planning is under way for the 2015 San Juan Bautista Mission Fiesta and the Fiesta Committee is looking for volunteers from the community. This year’s Fiesta celebrates the 203rd year anniversary of the Mission church’s dedication to St. John the Baptist. The Fiesta honors the Mission’s history and all the peoples past and present. The committee invites persons with organizational skills, historical knowledge, helpful equipment, artistic talents, and other such gifts to step forward and share their skills for the success of the event. Other volunteers are also needed at the event to support the many teams that operate Fiesta. Would you like to join an action subcommittee to make things happen? It takes more than 100 people to plan, set up, run activities and booths, clean up and put away. Fiesta 2015 will be held on June 28in the historic Mission Olive Grove.
Elks pancake breakfast
The Hollister Elks Lodge will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast on May 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. The menu will consist of pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee and juice. Casino trip fundraiser
The Hollister Senior Center is having a fundraiser trip to Table Mountain in May 23. The departure is 10 a.m. from the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. The cost is $30 per person. Each participant gets $5 in free play at the casino. Anyone over age 21 is welcome. This is a fun trip to play bingo at Table Mountain. Advance registration is required. Youth Alliance Change Maker
You can be part of the Change Maker community by joining us at Fortino Winery in Gilroy on May 30 for our “Youth Alliance Change Makers” celebration. VFW golf tournament
Golf registration forms are now available for the third annual VFW Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place on June 19 with sign-in at 9:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Entry fee is $125 per person, which includes tee prizes, golf cart and dinner. Non-golfers are also welcome for dinner. Dinner tickets are $35 per person. No-host cocktails are at 5:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. A silent auction and raffle will also take be held. Kids Rule Theatre Camp
San Benito Stage Company is presenting the children’s summer theatre camp, Kids Rule. It is set for June 22-26 with a theme of “Kids rule on Broadway.” It includes workshops in ensemble music, dance movement, acting, improve, pantomime, small group vocal, auditioning and more. Kiddie Parade
The Annual Kiddie Parade will be held on July 4th beginning at 10 a.m. The Kiddie Parade will begin in the commuter parking lot at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Drive and continue north on Memorial Drive to Marguerite Maze Middle School. Children of all ages are welcome to participate: walk, ride, roller skate, roller blade, etc. All entrants will receive an American flag donated by ACE Hardware. A short program will be held at Marguerite Maze Middle School following the Kiddie Parade; then the kids receive cookies, donated by the local McDonald’s restaurants, and punch donated by the 4th of July Celebration Committee. The Kiddie Parade is presented by the 4th of July Celebration Committee of the Hollister Downtown Association. No dogs or motorized vehicles are permitted. Fireworks display
The annual community fireworks display will take place on July 4 (Saturday) at 9:30 p.m. in the field adjacent to Marguerite Maze Middle School. The fireworks are a gift to the public from the 4th of July Celebration Committee and the 12 local non-profit groups that sell safe and sane fireworks at their fireworks booths.
Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament
The 2015 Kelly Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament at San Juan Oaks is set for July 10. This event is in memory of San Juan Oaks Director of Golf Manny Freitas’ wife Kelly who passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Kelly Freitas Memorial Scholarship Fund. The golf tournament begins with a noon shotgun start that includes music throughout the day, unique on-course games including the “High Heel Hole”, the “Fastest Hole” & “the “Blind Fold Hole”. The dinner party begins at 5 p.m. with a no-host cocktail hour, silent auction, raffle, games and live entertainment. Dinner party tickets are $45 each and are available at San Juan Oaks beginning April 1. This event will fill up very quickly so be sure to sign up and get your tickets ASAP.
