Despite economic woes facing San Juan Bautista this year, the Christmas spirit will shine this weekend.
The public is beckoned on Saturday to participate in the city’s annual Candlelight Tour, which will begin at dusk at Mission San Juan Bautista. Those who wish to join should be at the mission by 6 p.m.
Songbooks and candles will be provided and refreshments will be served after the tour at the state park, compliments of the San Juan Bautista Chamber of Commerce and the Plaza History Association.
“Anyone who wishes to come and join us are welcomed,” said Terry Marburger, the chamber’s executive director.
In the past few weeks, residents, tourists and holiday shoppers have enjoyed the special attention given them by local merchants who are promoting San Juan as the city with specialty shops.
“We have more than pretty items in neat old buildings,” Marburger said. “This is a town where shop owners are experts in their fields.”
Visitors were enticed with a scavenger hunt last weekend while children decorated the community Christmas tree with hand-made ornaments.
There is still time for parents to bring their children to see Santa Claus at his temporary home in the old sheriff’s substation next to Daisy’s Saloon on Third Street.
More than 50 San Juan merchants have agreed to keep their doors open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays until Christmas. Many will serve refreshments, Marburger said.
