Ron Moritz, an Aromas resident, found himself on Carpinteria Avenue on a recent Wednesday evening as he does about once a month.
He is one of many car and motorcycle enthusiasts who gather for the free car show hosted in Aromas on the third Wednesday of the month by Marshall’s Market.
“I try to go down there every month,” he said. “It’s a fun town get-together. It’s been real crowded. There have been a lot of people there, a lot of different groups.”
The car show is open to classic cars, hot rods, motorcycles, racing cars and just about anyone who has an interest in it. Oscar and Juana Munoz started the monthly event five years ago because of Oscar’s interest in cars.
“Everyone is welcome,” Juana said. “There is no fee for the car. They can come and we have live music. We barbecue. People come with their families to hang out and have a good time.”
While most car shows feature only the finished products, Juana said Oscar’s favorite part of their monthly event is that people will bring cars as they are working on them.
“They don’t necessarily have to be done,” Juana said. “They can be working on a project and bring it throughout the year – or the years – and you get to see the progress on the cars. They talk about different challenges and they have helped each other out.”
The turnout goes up in the summer, though Juana said the weather can be cold or foggy in Aromas in the evenings.
“We get people from a lot of different places,” she said. “We have one from Boulder Creek who comes to almost all the shows. We have people from Castroville, Gilroy, Watsonville and Salinas.”
She said that her husband has been teaching their four kids about cars.
“He started working with cars when he was 15 years old,” she said. “Our oldest is 16 and for the last year-and-a-half, he’s been working on his own car. He knows the value; not just the money, but the work that it takes.”
Marshall’s Market is located at 300 Carpinteria Road, in Aromas. Upcoming car shows are scheduled for Aug. 17 and Sept. 21, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., and Oct. 22, from noon to 6 p.m.
