The San Benito High School varsity football team – the No. 1 seed in last year’s Central Coast Section playoffs and perennial football powerhouse – could be faced with something they almost never see – a losing season.
After falling 25-8 to San Lorenzo Valley High last Saturday the Balers slipped to 0-2 and now must face Wilcox tonight and Bellarmine and Alvarez the following weeks before they get their next home game on October 12 against North Salinas.
Against the Cougars, the Balers fell behind 16-0 on three field goals by Michael Eisner and a 12-yard touchdown reception by Daniel Stevenson midway into the third quarter before Baler running back Abel Jacquez punched his way into the end zone from two yards out. Miles Sanchez then picked up the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 16-8.
Unfortunately for the Balers it was the closest they would get to their non-league foes as they failed to find the end zone again that afternoon. San Lorenzo Valley, however, was able to. The Cougars extended its lead to 22-8 on a 20-yard scoring run by Ian McGinnis at the end of the third quarter. The Cougars then made the score 25-8 in the fourth quarter when Eisner connected on his fourth field goal of the day to seal the victory.
Tonight’s Baler football game is at Wilcox High. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
