Kent Child and Anthony Ruiz have gained the most votes in San
Benito County for two open seats representing the Hollister area on
the Gavilan College Board of Trustees. In the race for the
Gilroy-area seat, Walter Glines had the most local votes for one
available seat after the first round of results were released in
San Benito County, according to the unofficial results.
As early results came in for the Gavilan College Community Joint College District seats, some candidates had handy leads over their opponents.
With 40 percent of the votes counted in Santa Clara County and 48 percent of the votes counted in San Benito County, Kent Child, an incumbent, and Anthony Ruiz led the candidates for the San Benito County-area seat.
In the Gilroy-area race, newcomer Walter Glines led candidate Eleanor Villarreal in both counties. He had 56.4 percent in the Gilroy area and 54.4 percent in San Benito County. Villarreal had 43.6 percent in Santa Clara County and 44.3 percent in San Benito County with slightly more than 40 percent of precincts reporting, according to the results.
Child had 37.2 percent of the votes in Santa Clara County in the most recent results and 33.7 percent in San Benito. Ruiz had 27.6 percent of the votes in Santa Clara County and 31.5 percent in San Benito County.
Five candidates vied for three Board of Trustee seats in two of the Gavilan Joint Community College areas. Though the district is divided into three areas, voters who reside in all three districts can vote for candidates in both races.
For the Gavilan Community College District’s San Benito County area, there were two open seats. Both incumbents, Elvira Zaragoza Robinson and Child, ran against newcomers Ruiz, a retired faculty member at the school, and Stelvio Locci, an instructor and counselor from Hartnell College.
Look back for more.
