”
I read in the Free Lance a few weeks ago that NASA is conducting
experiments in Aromas. Supposedly it has something to do with
exploration in outer space. And I remember a big article in the
Free Lance just a few years ago describing how SETI (The Search for
Extra-terrestrial Intelligence) was poking around in South County,
looking for an antenna site for listening in on radio transmissions
from outer space.
Now, I read that a large military convoy has been recently seen
heading south on Highway 25.
I think we have a right to know what is going on. Come on
Congressman Farr, let us in on the secret.

“I agree with the editorial in the Free Lance, Los Valientes need to come forward and identify themselves. Secret groups just are not a good idea. In that same vein, there is a secret group here in our little town calling themselves “The San Benito County Militia.” They assemble every morning downtown for coffee, wearing what passes for a “uniform.”
These militia members need to come forward and answer some questions. For example, why do they feel it necessary to be a “militia?” Who is their commander? Are all of their guns legal? Are any of their members elected or appointed officials? Are any of their members seeking elected local office? We have a right to know, especially if these people are either in the government or seeking elected office.”
“By any means, it’s not what the Halloween Dreamer said that scared me; it’s you and your new candidate that do! Remember, ghosts will come out of the closet.”
“A long time ago, in a county not so far away, a group of power hungry county employees worked day and night to assure themselves that all county and city political power would be controlled by them and only them.
They sought to intimidate those who defied them, abused their positions of power, and in the finest tradition of fascism, blatantly manipulated the justice system to their own petty ends-punishing those they opposed and protecting those they considered ‘friends.’
No one was safe from their abuses of power.
Fortunately, a good man was elected and drove them out of office. He stood up to their baseless lawsuits, and threats of lawsuits, character assassination and outright lies.
Like rats off a sinking ship, they fled to another elected county office, cozy in the knowledge that their government paychecks would remain secure, at least for a little while longer.
For a few more years, they continued on, plotting their return to power. But the electorate wasn’t fooled and every time they tried to return to power by election, they were soundly defeated.
Bitter, they spent their time tearing down the accomplishments of others.
Now, having been driven from the last vestiges of political power by a landslide election, they sit back in the shadows and throw stones at everyone and anyone who they perceive has done them wrong. No one is safe from their vitriol – not county supervisors, judges, law enforcement officials, city council members, business leaders, newspapers or just plain members of this community.
These rumor-mongers and eaves-droppers would have the citizens of this community believe that anyone in office is an idiot and only they can save the county and city from the various pressures arrayed against them.
But, to paraphrase Abe Lincoln, they still haven’t learned that they couldn’t fool all of the people all of the time.”
