Hollister council members Monday will consider approving the purchase of a Jeep Wrangler for parking enforcement from a Web site dealership in a move that would cut nearly $5,000 off the original estimate.

Police Chief Jeff Miller is set to present a proposal to buy the 2008 two-door model from www.postalpete.com, which touts itself as the “#1 postal Jeep dealer in the world.” The estimated cost, before taxes and other fees, is $23,175 – while the total would come to $25,320. Miller in a staff report notes how the 2008 model is priced lower than the 2009 model’s estimate, which was $28,000.

The vehicle is right-hand drive and it is several inches shorter in length than the 2009 model, making it “more desirable” than the newer version, the staff report reads. It will come from the authorized Jeep dealer in Galena, Iowa, and will be certified for California emissions standards with a three year, 36,000-mile factory warranty. The price also includes shipping, the report notes.

The staff report points out that the police department checked with local vendors, who determined they cannot provide a 2008 Jeep Wrangler.

Council members recently approved reinstatement of parking enforcement in downtown Hollister, along with giving staff an OK to line up the vehicle purchase. The Hollister Downtown Association requested the enforcement because some businesses contend they lose business without it.

Monday’s council meeting is set for 6 p.m. at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St.
