Hollister officials want to stir the creative senses, so to speak, by considering a design competition for some type of Pinnacles National Park promotion on the west side.
City officials are looking for ways to enhance the western gateway, as identified as a priority in the general plan along with the northern gateway, while promoting the county’s national park, said planning official Mary Paxton.
Council members Monday approved moving ahead on an open and anonymous design competition with sealed proposals. City officials are thinking about some kind of sign, but wouldn’t want to restrict submissions to that.
“We’re thinking a sign but it could be more open ended,” Paxton said.
Planners like Paxton are thinking a gateway sign could help attract many of the drivers coming into Hollister from Highway 156, from the west.
“A lot of them from the north usually take Highway 25,” she said.
The city will use $50,000 in local transportation funds that were set aside by the Council of San Benito County Governments for such a potential use at the agency’s May 22 meeting, according to a council agenda report.
