Hollister – All four San Benito High boys and girls water polo teams wrapped up the league portion of their schedules with victories over visiting Robert Louis Stevenson Tuesday.

The boys varsity team (13-11, 5-1 TCAL) finished with a No. 2 seed going into the Tri-County Athletic League tournament next week.

The girls varsity team (15-10, 6-2 TCAL), which has lost just twice in league – to Live Oak and Santa Catalina, defeated RLS 15-7.

The boys won 14-11. They held a sizable lead for most of the match. At the half, San Benito was up 7-4, and after three, the Balers held a 12-6 advantage.

“It wasn’t that close,” said coach Tom Agan. “They came back a little when we put in the subs.”

The Balers had six goals from Zach Bainter. Lucas Zepeda had four, and Rory Bloch and Dave Smith had two. Alex Marks had two saves.

The team will be competing in the Monta Vista tournament this weekend

“We’re just going to continue doing what we have been doing,” said Agan about the preparation for TCALs. “They are playing some of the best polo they have this year, and that is the way it ought to be going. The offense we are using right now is definitely working, and the defense is pretty stout. We are make adjustments and reading other teams well. Especially this year, going in as a No. 2 seed is huge.”

JV boys

San Benito (13-4, 3-2 TCAL) defeated RLS 6-5 Tuesday. RLS had previously defeated Live Oak. Curtis Wahl and Jason Andrade had two goals each. Buddy Emmons and Steve Larson added goal for the Balers. Matt Thorpe had a strong game in goal to keep the Balers ahead throughout. San Benito has a tournament this weekend at Leland before the season ends.

“I am happy with how they played at home and on the road,” said coach John Agan. “The guys really haven’t been blown out all season.”

JV girls

The JV Haybaler girls pounced on visiting Robert Louis Stevenson Tuesday, winning 19-2.

Goalie Michelle Dietrich, who also had two goals, played in the net for the first three quarters. Senior Alex Stern played the final quarter.

Every Baler got at least one goal in the homecoming game. Jessica Temperino had four goals, and Judi Sumida had three goals. Jayme Telles, Megan Guella, Stephanie Rodriguez had two goals. Alex Stern, Elsie Tozier, Valerie Nicolason and Jarae Tanner had one each.

Jayme Telles and Valerie Nicolason were called up to the varsity to compete in the TCAL tournament. The JV girls have four more games left in a tournament in Hollister this weekend. The first game is Friday at noon.
